Lesson 15:
15. Jump Hook Progression
The Jump Hook Progression is the best way to teach players how to shoot the jump hook.
1. Standing Jump Hooks. Start with the ball under the chin with both
hands on the ball. Standing in front and perpendicular to the rim. Outside foot should be a little bit in front of the inside foot. Feet shoulder width apart, but toes of inside foot should be even with the heel of the outside foot. That gives a nice shoulder turn.
Straight up shot by extending the arm. Should see the ball out of the corner of your eye. Jump as high as you can.
Explode and feel your feet pushing off the wood on the
floor. Bend your knees to get the full strength of the legs.
Five shots. Coach or teammate to rebound. Put the ball back under chin ready to shoot next shot.
Your key points are:
· Chin the ball. Start with the ball chinned. Be strong with the ball when going up.
· Use legs for Power Pushing hard off the floor to go up.
· The ball goes up by the ear and have vision of the ball out of the corner of the eye. If not you end up shooting behind your head at a bad angle; then the ball comes off the fingertips.
2. Jump Hook from a Half Pivot. Both feet are pointing toward
the opposite basket. Make half pivot bring lead foot around.
Explode off the ground. Get outside shoulder turned, so
the body has a slight angle to the basket, but do not expose
the ball.
1. Strong Pivot
2. Ball Chinned.
3. High Release point and off the fingertips.
Add in the half fake, show the ball
Make final dribble quick and pull into the chin position to
go up for the shot.
3. Jump Hook from Half Pivot add the dribble. Same starting position as the previous shot. Half pivot with the feet. Pound
the dribble down with two hands. Make sure the dribble
stays between both feet on the bounce.
Allow the dribble to give momentum on the way up for
the jump hook. As the ball is being put to the ground take a step with the lead foot. Make sure to keep your
eyes up and look at the target when shooting the ball.
Do not focus on the defense.
4. Jumo Hook one dribble from the block, step across with inside foot
(foot closest to the basket), then on foot and hip pivot
to give momentum to go up for the shot.
One dribble from the block, step across with inside foot
(foot closest to the basket), then turn on outside foot and hip pivot
to give momentum to go up for the shot.
Ball needs to be dribbled quickly, two hand power dribble
and then immediately into chin position.
Allow the dribble to give momentum on the way up for
the jump hook. As the ball is being put to the ground take a
deep drop step with the lead foot. Make sure to keep
eyes up and look at the target when shooting the ball.
5. Jump Hook Starting outside the lane. Take one or
two hard dribbles to the middle of the paint. Go off both
feet and get up as high as possible for the jump hook.
