Lesson 4:
4. Getting Open
Getting Open in the Post is different than other spots on the floor.
There is more contact, the refs usually allow more pushing and shoving.
Make one of three cuts
1. V-Cut
On the V-Cut you will change speed and change direction. The V-Cut works if a defender is in help-side position and the ball is on the opposite wing. Come across the lane and Cut above the defender or below the defender. Read where the defense is playing you and where you want to catch the ball. Take high and go low, or take low and go high. There is a need to be able to change speed and change direction. Changing the direction gets a defender off balance. Changing speed allows the post player to get separation and get open. Against a good player, you will not be able to come straight across the lane. You can come straight across vs. a Zone, which we call Flashing Across. But against a man, you need to move the defender
2. Pivot into the defender. Come across the lane make contact with the defender, pivot and go to the spot where you want to catch the ball. Making contact with the defender slows them down giving you the space to get open.
3. Face defender and pivot into the defender. This happens when you are in the block area. Instead of fighting with the defender, face them, pivot into them and receive the ball.
Knowing how to get position sets you up to Score More Points in the Post
