Lesson 10:
10. Power Moves
The Power Move is an essential move for any Post Player.
The teaching points are:
1. The Power Dribble. Use a strong two hand dribble and the dribble goes in the paint, between the legs. Power and strength on the dribble give momentum and low to keep away from the defense.
We want to emphasize the dribble going into the paint because that gets us closer to the basket and a low dribble is hard to steal.
2. Deep and long step to the basket
A deep drop step with the lead foot (closest to the baseline). allows you to Get you closer to the hoop by taking you directly to the hoop.
The deep step Seals off the defender using your rear and hips
Then hop on the dribble.
So it is a step, dribble, and hop.
3. Shoulders parallel to the backboard.
This makes any defender come across your body to get to the ball.
A Strong Power Move helps your team because it is a high percentage shot, hard to defend and you end up in position to put the ball back in the basket if you miss the first shot.
Work on having a wide base and keeping the back foot on the ground until the ball has left the hands
Add in shot fake or ball fakes getting the defender off balance.
On the fake, it is key that the body stays low and pivot foot stays down on the ground
You want to show a piece of the ball on the fake. Not just using a head fake but to really sell any fake show a piece of the ball.
Keep the ball tight to the body on your fakes you do not want to loose with the ball
