Do You Play Schools Bigger Than You?
Can’t Block the D-1 End With the Booster Prez Son?
THEN YOU NEED POWER READ !!!
“If you can’t block ‘em, read ‘em.”
POWER READ is the so-called Inverted Veer and has been the weapon of choice for Cam Newton, RG3, and now Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, and Jalen Hurts.
It evolved from the Zone Read, which the QB reads an unblocked defender on the backside. But reading backside & having the QB go in the opposite direction of the RB was missing a great part of option football, which was to read a frontside defender.
The POWER READ solves that dilemma because it reads an unblocked defender on the frontside, while sending both the RB and QB in same direction, but on inverted paths: the RB goes outside while the QB dives inside.
POWER & POWER READ are two plays in one because both use the simple POWER blocking scheme: OL use angles & double teams to cave down the defense & leave the edge defender unblocked.
- Great for small schools who cannot invest the time into teaching combo blocks with 2-way players.
- Great vs blitzing. Easy to teach because you just block whomever is on your track.
This unblocked defender can be kicked out (POWER)….or read by the QB (POWER READ).
The kickout player can be a FB, pulling Guard, or Sniffer/TE/Wing coming across the formation. On POWER READ this same player pulls up into the hold to lead block for the QB.
The End is in total conflict:
- Squeeze to take on the kickout & let the RB run around him
- Contain the sweeping RB and let the QB dive inside of him.
These two plays allow you to take advantage of athletes at the skill positions and use your smaller, more athletic lineman - to your advantage.
As defenses have evolved, any good SYSTEM has answers. The MULTIPLE GUN SYSTEM will run it with fly sweep motion or add additional blockers at the point of attack.
Coach Marty begins by going over the blocking schemes:
- Over, Under, Odd, and 33 Stack defenses.

Pin and pull concepts have become increasingly popular in the last 5 years.
Why? It’s easy to implement!
Similar to how zone, gap and power schemes work – the pin & pull scheme has a set of rules which allow for lineman to communicate with each other to execute the best possible blocking scenario. The base rules for the pin & pull system are as such:
- If uncovered, pull play-side
- Down blocks fill for the pulling lineman, typically in the back-side gap (which tend to be an easier leverage block)
- Running backs follow the pulling lineman for added downfield blocking support
The pin and pull system looks similar to the outside zone play, as it still has some of the same characteristics, such as arc releasing and reach blocking. The RB also has the same aiming point
on both PIN & PULL and Outside Zone.
However, in the pin-pull sweep, the down blocks give linemen better blocking angles instead of the reach and run technique used in a typical outside zone play.
The pin and pull starts up front, with the ease it presents offensive linemen.
There can be as many as 3 linemen pulling !!!
It’s easy to understand for the linemen.
WANT TO RUN RPOs?? The biggest advantage is that no linemen are downfield immediately. That provides roughly 1.5 seconds for the quarterback before the linemen even consider leaving the line of scrimmage.
Since the team can run the ball anytime it needs to, the offense is always right if the QB makes correct reads
- that QB can always take off and run,
- or pass over the top if the defender comes up as run support.

Whether it’s a game you expect to win, or one you are a heavy underdog – having one or two special plays in your back pocket to steal a touchdown can change the game.
Coach Marty breaks down the wide varieties of specials they have carried into game weeks the past few years, and most importantly talks about the why. Why did they install that look that week against that particular opponent. Most worked, a few didn’t. But carrying a few specials is a trademark of the Tiger Offense.
Defenses know they are going to have to line up and play great defensive football to slow Reedley’s Offense down, and often the trick play touchdown is the straw that breaks the camels back.

The goal is to score touchdowns, and when you get inside the Red Zone and Goal Line, with the condensed space, and extra defenders near the line of scrimmage often it takes a little more creativity to get the ball those final few yards into the end zone.
Coach Marty will walk you through how defenses typically morph in the Red Zone and Goal Line and how Reedley attacks defenses in these situations with multiple Tight Ends, Motion, and of course Play Action!
When it comes to getting into the endzone no one has done it better than the Tigers the past two years, they finished 2nd in the state this year in Touchdowns with 67 in 11 games, and 5th in 2018 with 63 in 11 games.
In order for your offense to be truly great, you need to have an answer for everything a defense may throw at you.
Furthermore in order for you kids to trust and buy into your system you have to be able to coach them and put them in positions to be successful regardless of how tough the defensive look is – and this is especially true when teaching your lineman how to block teams that want to blitz and move against the run game.
Because of the success Reedley College has had on offense the past two years, a number of teams have just resorted to Cover – 0 Pressure, and repeatedly bringing pressure in the hope that that will slow down the Reedley Run Game. Spoiler alert it hasn’t.

The intermediate drop back passing game is a huge weapon for any offense. The ability to drop back and get a 10 yard completion on 1st down will jump start a drive, or keep one alive on third down!
Coach Marty’s quarterbacks have finished 2nd and 5th in the state of California (out of 68 teams) in passing efficiency the last two years because of the high percentage concepts Reedley College employees for its quarterbacks.
Additionally he will show you how to adapt concepts to multiple TE formations as well as condensed and compressed WR formations.
