    Backward to Forward Pivot

     view description
    • Backward to Forward Pivot

The first part is to get players used to opening up their hip while skating backwards:

Have your players skate backwards toward the blue line.

Upon reaching it, have them pick their foot up off the ice and open their hip, pointing their foot as much as they can in the direction they're moving.

Have them ride it out as far as they can, on one foot.

Once they're familiar with the first part, the second component is simply a step:

Once their hip is open, the players take a step down on the open foot, which brings their body around naturally and they're able to move into a forward skating position.

The better a player becomes with this, the less speed they'll lose in that backward to forward transition, which is an important part of hockey.
