    Teaching the Wrist Shot

    • Teaching the Wrist Shot

You've already instilled part of the technique of this shot with your passing drills and instruction:  just like the forehand pass, the puck should roll up the blade, from near the heel to the toe, and players need to concentrate on that sweeping motion. Again, young players will want to smack the puck; which severely limits both their accuracy and the power behind the shot. Your job is to steer them away from that.

Like hitting a baseball, a wrist shot derives its power from the shifting of one's weight from the back leg to the front. After emphasizing this to your players, you can get into the mechanics.

Start them off in a stickhandling position, and have them move their bottom hand a few inches farther down the shaft.

Have them bring the puck behind their back foot and shift their weight to their back foot.

As they bring the puck forward, their weight shifts forward as well.

As they shoot, all of their weight should transfer to their front foot, and their follow-through should be low, with their stick pointing toward the target.

      Coaching Tip:

It is key to emphasize the importance of the weight shift; since they don't have a lot of upper body strength, younger players will get almost all of the shooting power from this technique.
