    Stationary Passing

    • Stationary Passing

Like many hockey skills, being in the correct hockey ready position is essential. Keeping hands away from your body is important, both in making and receiving a pass.

With a correct hockey pass, the puck starts toward the heel of the blade and rolls off near the toe.

Encourage young players to sweep the puck to their teammate and not smack it – this gets them used to the correct passing motion and helps with their accuracy.

When they're on the receiving end of a pass, players should bring their stick back as the puck reaches their stick – this little bit of "give" will help them control the puck better.

      Coaching Tip:

The best way to practice this with younger players is just to station them across from each other, instruct them on the right technique, and watch them as they do it. You also can try to reinforce the sweeping and give in a drill like this by emphasizing how quiet it should sound if it's done right. Conversely, if you hear a lot of noise, it's because players aren't sweeping the puck across the ice.
