    First Touch Drill

     view description
    • First Touch Drill:

This drill helps players to practice controlling the ball out of the air using a wedge technique.
Players will get experience controlling with different parts of their feet - the bottom, the inside and the outside.
Progression: Begin by having players practice wedge control with the bottom of their feet. Have players dribble around and throw the ball up to themselves upon your command, wedge-controlling with the bottom of the foot to stop the ball. Players should quickly play the ball again, getting it moving and dribbling around.
Next, use the same format for wedge-controlling with the inside of the foot. Players should lean their bodies to the side opposite the foot they are controlling with, which will keep the ball properly in motion.
Next, use the same format for wedge-controlling with the outside of the foot. When wedge-controlling with the outside of the foot, players should lean their bodies to the same side as the foot that they are controlling with, to keep the ball properly in motion.
Finally, turn this drill into a game. Split players into pairs, with one ball per pair.
One partner throws the ball to the other partner, who controls the ball in the direction of the closest goal.
After controlling, the player dribbles through the goal, picks up the ball and serves it to the first partner, who performs the same maneuver to the closest goal. Play proceeds in this way until either time is up or the winning pair scores a certain number of goals.
