    1 v. 1 with Passive Defender

     view description
    • Drill Objective: To help players practice dribbling and attacking techniques against passive opposition.

      Drill Set-Up

Set out a 20-x-30-yard area for each group of four players, one soccer ball per group. Two attackers stand on one end line, one on the far end line. The remaining player, the passive defender, stands in the middle. The passive defender can move side to side (laterally) but not off the line. Additionally, the passive defender acts merely as an obstacle and should not tackle. Attackers take turns dribbling from one end to the other past the defender. Attackers perform dribbling moves as they beat the defender. Once they beat the defender, attackers accurately pass the ball to the attacker at the far end line.

      Drill Progressions

There are many levels of progression and improvement for this drill. Players should work on attacking the ball when they receive it, dribbling straight at the defender. Players can use feints and dribbling directions to lure the defender to one side then beat him or her on the other side with a quick cut. Additionally, different dribbling moves can be attempted one at a time. These include directional cuts, scissors moves, etc. Each technique can be practiced at a slower speed until the player's skill increases. From there, the speed at which the technique is executed can be increased.
