This is an important drill because it adds context tot he 1v1.  It's pretty easy for a fast girl to run right by her defender in a classic 1v1 drill, but when another defender guarding an off ball adjacent player is added to the environment, it teaches a situation that occurs regularly in women's lacrosse: people in your way!

Here's a street version of the same drill!

“Everything that happens outside of about 10 yard is noise.” - The late great Dave Huntley

There is a lot of truth to this statement which is why we work on physical dodging and post up moves.  The ability to play this way is necessary when, for whatever reason, you run out of space.  Employing techniques like the Dead Shoulders, Rip Moves, Spin Hooks and various fakes can also be a great equalizer against an unfavorable match up.

When posting up, players also must be able to fake and feed.  There will always be an adjacent defender who will want to help and maybe double.  Which brings me to explain an interesting phenomenon that occurs during post ups and physical dodging, where an on ball defender will underplay their man towards the adjacent help.  Furthermore, the on ball defender can’t see whether you faked or passed while the off ball defender will always bite on a pump.

Rules:
  • Tight 1v1
  • Off ball cutter can’t cut unless slider commits to slide
  • Dodger tries to draw and dump, spin underneath, or pump through the gap.

Enjoy and have a great day!
