Lesson 9:
Time and Judging Distance
The final component to developing an effective strike whether its a speed or power strike is understanding and controlling the Time/Distance Variable. A common mistake often made when practicing striking techniques is standing in the kill zone (touching distance to target without stepping first) while hitting mitts and bags to much. The problem in doing this is it promotes a false sense of judging distance when transferring striking techniuqes tnto real application. There should be two applications when practicng striking. One being close range, and the other being long range. Most striking training doesn't take in account the need to be able close the gap on someone when you can't get close. This is VERY important to learn because learning to close the gap effectively forces you to train to economize your motion and movement to minimize telegraphing. Also, the other reason you need to practice this way is because you need to be able to judge and control distance for defenses purposes. However, learning to strike in close ranges is also a must because wnen you close the gap to close range, from there you need to have efficient defensive skills when striking in close ranges.
The Time/Distance Variable is the abilty to preceive when you are to close and to far away frrom your opponent, and still being able to effective both offensive and defensively. The last thing you want to in grain in your mind is to get into a habit of standing toe to toe trading strikes. If you do end up doing this you better have very efficient defenses to protect you from getting blindsed by a strike you didn't see coming.
