Unlock the Secrets of the 5-Out Delay Offense Playbook: Master Spacing, Pace, and Scoring Opportunities
In this breakdown, we dive deep into the ins and outs of the 5-Out Delay Offense, a powerful strategy used by teams like Penn State,Indiana State University, Kentucky, and more teams to dominate tempo, disrupt defenses, and maximize scoring efficiency. Whether you're a coach looking to elevate your team's offensive game or a player aiming to understand how to execute a high-level offense, this playbook is for you.
Pace & Spacing Fundamentals: Learn how to create and maintain ideal spacing across the floor, ensuring your offense operates with fluidity and purpose.
Maximizing the Delay Series: Discover how to implement the delay offense to run down the game clock, limit opposing possessions, and control the rhythm of the game.
Creating “Overs” on DHO's & PNR's: Master the technique of running dribble handoffs (DHO) and pick-and-rolls (PNR) in scoring areas that force defenders to chase, leading to wide-open opportunities for your players.
Creating Scoring Opportunities: Learn how to use the 5-Out setup to generate quality shots, whether through quick ball movement, backdoor cuts, or exploiting defensive switches.
Adapting to Defense: Understand how to counter defenses that switch on screens or try to clog the paint. With this offense, you'll always have a counter-move ready.

Spacing and Positioning: The key to the 5-Out offense is spacing your players around the perimeter. This allows for maximum driving lanes, clear passing lanes, and room to run effective screening actions like dribble handoffs (DHOs) and pick-and-rolls (PNR).
Slow Down the Pace (But Not Too Much): The delay offense isn’t about stalling—it’s about controlling the tempo. By waiting for the right opportunities and reading the defense, you’ll either generate open shots or force defensive breakdowns that lead to easy points.
Creating High-Quality Shots: Whether you’re looking for an open three, a backdoor layup, or a quick drive to the basket, this playbook teaches you how to maximize your offense through effective passing, timing, and spacing.
Control the Game: If you’re ahead and want to control the clock, the delay offense is your best friend. By deliberately slowing down the pace, you limit the opposing team’s opportunities to score while creating high-quality shots for your own squad.
Maximize Offensive Potential: This offense is not just about taking time off the clock—it’s about making every possession count. With precise spacing and intelligent reads, your team will consistently find open shots or generate breakdowns in the defense.
Effective Against Any Defense: Whether the defense plays man-to-man, switches on screens, or tries to zone up, the 5-Out Delay Offense offers flexible solutions. From exploiting mismatches to using creative movement to break down defensive structures, you’ll have answers for any situation.
Versatility: The delay offense works with various personnel. Whether you’re using multiple bigs or small-ball lineups, the spacing and ball movement are adaptable, making it a perfect fit for a wide range of playing styles.

The 5-Out Delay Offense is a powerful, high-IQ system designed to control the game, break down defenses, and create high-percentage scoring opportunities. Whether you're a coach looking to implement a dynamic offensive system or a player wanting to improve your court awareness and decision-making, this playbook is your roadmap to success.
Don’t miss out—dive into this comprehensive breakdown and start mastering one of the most effective offenses in modern basketball today.

I like Purdue’s chances…especially after reading this
Hey Coach,
Well, as they say, “changes are afoot” in college coaching circles…
When I read about John Beilein’s decision to leave Michigan and take the Cleveland job, I just shook my head.
It just didn’t make much sense to me…
Why leave a program that’s in the hunt for a national title for one that is…well, going to need some “returning” to say the least?
I will say this though, Matt Painter’s job just got a little easier.
Fact.
With Beilein out of the picture and Purdue now a perennial contender in March, I’m liking the Boilermaker’s chances going forward.
Painter now has 3 Big Ten titles and 5 Sweet 16 Appearances in 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament (including 3 in a row).
I don’t know about you, but I put him in the top 3 active coaches.
With that in mind, I did some digging and got my hands on something…
I have the Purdue Boilermaker’s Playbook for you!
Very timely I thought.
If there’s one thing we can ALL agree on, it is that there are few teams with the ability to get open three-point shots with their set plays with the consistency of Purdue. (Dare I say no one?)
Also fact.
This playbook is divided into 6 sections.
Swivel Series
Horns Series
Weave Series
Special Series
Baseline OB Series
Sideline Series
Straightforward. No BS.
And I have a SUPER imaginative title to match:
Purdue Boilermakers Offensive Playbook (hahaha…crazy original, I know.)
Anyway…
You’ll get 92 total pages with everything you’ll need to understand why Painter’s motion offense has consistently been one of the top 5 offenses in college ball in recent years.

Buying a new car is great, however getting upgraded tires, a new navigation, better sound system and sunroof make all the difference right?
You might say the same about a point guard. Having an average point guard will help you win some games, make some players better and even be consistent on a game to game basis. However we want the newer, more exciting and reliable players who have all the attributes.
Having a great point guard is essential in today's game. A point guard who can read the defense, distribute the ball effectively with a notable basketball IQ is like a brand new car that you can't wait to use. Just like upgrading your car, you can do the same with your point guard.
There are many ways to develop an average player into a widely recognized force. Incorporating advanced drills can and will enhance a players ability to produce for the team at a high capacity. For a guard position in the league to last, they have to show they can perform above average and consistently in a certain area, while remaining productive in another. They always possess flash, poise, purpose, the stage is never too big or small for them, they never stop striving for greatness, they compete, never get discouraged, they are great playmakers, and they are constantly enhancing their skill set.
Having a reliable guard who can score, dish and serve the ball is bound to take you into the playoffs. At both ends of the floor, they are energetic, dynamic and unselfish in their approach and ultimately have a big impact on any game.
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew and Assistant Coach Mark Morefield created a master course focusing on advanced guard development training. In this course, they breakdown specific skill building workouts that helped them set the cornerstone of Baylor Basketball. They cover everything from ball screen actions, single and double shots, single and double circuits, transition 3’s plus many more!
Bruce Pearl and the Auburn Tigers landed in the Final Four due to their 6th best offense in the country according to KenPom adjust efficiency rankings. The biggest part of of their high powered offense was their transition offense, as well as their three-point shooting in their primary break offense. If they didn't score in their primary break, Auburn would run a great half-court offense with the 4-out offense and a sensational drive and kick offense. The Auburn Tigers pushed the ball as much as they could and ran their set plays better than anyone. Bruce Pearl would run over sixty different set plays with several counters depending on the defense. They also used the backdoor set plays to get quick scores.
This Auburn Tigers Offense Playbook will give you several ideas on how you can rev up your fast break and get your team scoring various ways in the half-court.
I am now releasing the Gonzaga Playbook: “Learn Mark Few’s Style of play concerning Secondary Break, Flex Offense, Out of Bounds Plays, and Full Court Press Break”.
It has 73 pages of basketball coaching information.
It has 21 different variations on its secondary break offense which is tremendous.
Their Secondary break flows right into their flex offense. They are 12 different variations on the Flex Offense.
I have included 10 out-of-bounds plays and 7 Full Court Press Break options.
Gonzaga was (27-7) last year and their 13th straight 20-win season.
For the fourth time in his 11 years as head coach of Gonzaga University, he guided the Bulldogs to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in 2009.
Gonzaga’s run of 13 consecutive WCC Tournament championship game appearances is also the second-longest streak of years making a final of a conference tournament among the current conference alignments.
What do you get:
50 Plays
75 Pages of Basketball Coaching information into the Gonzaga Bulldog Program
21 Variations of Secondary Breaks
12 Variations of Flex Offense
10 Out of Bounds Plays
7 Full Court Press Breakers
I really think that you are going to enjoy the X’s and O’s that I have drawn up from watching countless hours of footage and research on the Gonzaga Bulldog Program.
I believe in working the ball in and out as Mark Few does with his Gonzaga Bulldogs. Today's pace and space offenses overlook this HUGE key. Getting the ball into the post is a big part of Coach Few's offenses and you will see why it is a critical skill from one of the country's most successful coaches, Mark Few.
Maybe you don't have a big post player, but Coach Few will show you how to use the post in transition as an offensive weapon. This playbook will help you and your players to see post opportunities as they develop in transition and how to put your guards and bigs in the best areas to score.
Things that you will learn:
You will also see how Coach Few runs multiple set plays and quick hitters to get the ball into the post scoring area close to the rim. These entries will frustrate any defense.
Mark Few believes in playing inside-out and shows you the kinds of offense that can be run after the ball goes inside. Coach Few will show you several counters to run on the defense as they react to the ball being in the post.
This playbook is a detailed look at the essential aspect of the game by Mark Few, one of the game's top coaching minds.
I’m going to keep this short today…
While the basketball world is pretty much focused on the college scene right now, many of us noticed the Utah Jazz ripping off 10 wins in a row recently.

Two of the up & coming young coaches in the game today, 3 Final Fours between them, and players who buy into their teams systems! VCU not only gets after it for 40:00 on the defensive end, but the offensive sets take advantage of players strengths and put them in a position to score. The constant ball screening actions make it hard for defenses to switch! Brad Stevens Butler offense is intricate and really takes advantage of movement and with Rotnei Clark, the team has a reliable shooter just waiting for the defense to sag or help. This playbook is one of the hottest of the year due to the fact that these coaches know what it takes to get their players to buy into the "team concept" and sacrifice personal glory. Take a look inside and you won't put it down! If your program is on the verge of being a top contender, then this playbook is right for you!!
Michigan's Juwan Howard, Arkansas’s Eric Musselman, and Virginia Tech’s Mike Young are just some of the faces in new places this season in college basketball.
There are 215 pages of basketball x's and o's!
Numerous sets of coaching changes have shifted the college basketball landscape this year, by now a customary offseason ritual, but also one which highlights several programs in transition. A wide number of high-major jobs opened up, and a fascinating mix of head coaches took over at new programs. Our new playbook breaks down the first-year coach's team, and its new coach, below.
Nate Oats - Alabama Crimson Tide
Eric Musselman: Arkansas Razorbacks
Mark Pope: BYU Cougars
John Brannen: Cincinnati Bearcats
Juwan Howard: Michigan Wolverines
Aaron McKie: Temple Owls
Jerry Stackhouse: Vanderbilt Commodores
Mike Young: Virginia Tech Hokies
Kyle Smith: Washington State Cougars

The numbers don’t lie. Change your defense
Hey Coach,
If you think the coaches at the top of the game have blind faith in their systems, you’d be mistaken.
These guys are committed to winning, not any one dogmatic approach…
Just like you and me, it’s adapt or get overrun!
Here is a textbook case of a coach who acknowledged a problem and took very specific steps to correct it.
Head Coach Brad Underwood was not in a desirable situation…
He inherited a “rebuilding” program…(we all know what that means).
And after two dismal seasons, he was open to change.
His high-pressure defense that has worked so well in JUCO was letting him down.
It was time to adapt or die.
Here’s what he did to turn the Illini program around and build a top 25 team…
Brought in outside help (from the Celtics organization)
Studied Sweet Sixteen teams, Big Ten teams, and more
Analyzed the categories where his team ranked worst
“I looked at where we were at in all those things and knew we had to make some changes. What we were doing, there were some positives for it. But at the end of the day, change needed to happen, and we had to do that.” – Brad Underwood
The result was a complete transformation.
The good kind.
He succeeded in morphing his pressure defense into a more of a pack line defense following the detailed plan in our new playbook.
And now you can put this plan to work for you.
In fact, we’ve dedicated an entire section of this playbook to the breakdown of the pressure defense to more of the pack line defense Underwood implements today.
In total, we’ve put together 122 pages of the plays responsible for pulling a once-proud D1 team out of the dregs and into contention!
Here’s all the proof you need that defenses have and will continue to evolve.
Have you?
If you need a blueprint, this is it.
See you courtside,
Scott “always evolving” Peterman
The Villanova Wildcats have long been known for their immaculate spacing, ball movement and Jay Wright’s affinity for “small ball” and four-guard lineups. The Wildcats’ offense ranks 11th in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency and ‘Nova fans hope it can lead the team all the way to the NCAA Final Four
The Late great innovator Steve Jobs once said: “Simplicity is the ultimate Sophistication.” That perfectly details the Wildcats approach on offense and is a large reason why they were able to shock the world to become NCAA Tournament champions over the loaded North Carolina Tarheels in 2016.
Villanova’s motion-based offense thrives on movement. Villanova coach Jay Wright came up with his version of the motion offense while at Hofstra University when he had problems recruiting quality big men. So, he adapted and used his team’s strength — its guards.
Now at Villanova, Wright wants his players to shoot the ball at will, invoking what he called “playing to your jump shot”
The spacing and balance are easy to see. The Wildcats are almost always beautifully spaced creating a horizontal and vertical stretch of the defense. There are simple rules for spacing and cuts that help Wright’s offense maintain its floor balance throughout the possession.
I am proud to introduce this newest basketball playbook. Boston Celtics 2009-2010 Basketball Playbook: “Learn Doc Rivers Style of Play for the Boston Celtics”. It has their top eight plays, 11 Transition Sets, 39 Half-Court Sets, 9 Sideline Out of Bounds Plays, and 8 Baseline Out of Bounds plays. It is a total of 75 of their best basketball plays combined into one compact playbook.
I really think that you will enjoy this NBA Playbook. It will have variations on the Pick and Roll Offense that you normally don’t see. You might see a couple sets that you can incorporate into your set play offense or use them as quick hitters. 75 of the top basketball coaching plays from the Boston Celtics is at your disposal for $15. I hope that you enjoy.
Coach Peterman
Man! I’m looking forward to this season!
Can you guess where I’ll be parked tonight?
I’ve always been a huge Jayhawks fan (Yes, I prefer to overlook some tournament hiccups over the years).
Anyway…
You gotta love a good ole fashioned HoF level coaching clash!
Am I right?
In this one, I’m giving the nod to Bill Self and Jayhawks over Mike Krzyzewski and Duke.
(As fun as he is to watch, I just don’t think Tre Jones will be enough to turn this one Duke’s way)
Bill Self is obviously one of the best in the game. If you examine his “evolution” from his turnaround of the Oral Roberts and then the moves Tulsa made up through his tenure in Kansas, you can help but be impressed.
It’s almost a given every year isn’t it? Coach Self has won (or shared) the Big 12 Conference title in 14 out of 16 years he’s been there!
I’m mean seriously…a .957 winning percentage at home? What the…
Which means today’s email is PERFECT timing!
In an obvious display of bias (and perfect timing)…I’ve put together a Jayhawks playbook and kept the format very traditional.
I elected to bypass the “game breakdown” layout of the previous few playbooks I’ve put out. This one looks like this:
5 sections:
Half Court Man Offense
Half Court Zone Offense
SLOBs
BLOBs
BLOBs vs Zone
103 pages in all.
Now you can get in inside look at his strong hi-lo motion offense.
Elegant in its simplicity…
I can’t recommend this one enough. I’m actually not 100% sure why I haven’t done this earlier!
Anywhoo…
You can grab this one effective immediately.
Here’s the link: Kansas Jayhawks Offensive Playbook
(Yes, I just called it Kansas Jayhawks Offensive Playbook) 😊
Grab it instantly before the game…it’ll be worth it!

“An in-depth look at the X’s and O’s behind the 2017 EuroBasket Tournament…” Check out the Slovenia Coach Igor Kokoskov (NBA Utah Jazz Assistant) that won it all!
Slovenia and Head Coach Igor Kokoskov was supposed to be an afterthought and not win the 2017 EuroBasket Tournament. They had Luka Donic that is talented and will be on an NBA roster next season, but Goran Dragic was the only NBA player on their roster. Most experts had Ukraine beating them in the first round.
The Slovenia team lead all teams in offensive efficiency in the 2017 EuroBasket Tournament. They beat Latvia – Kristaps Porzingis and Davis Bertans, and a Spain team comprised of Pau and Marc Gasol, Willy and Juancho Hernangomez, Ricky Rubio, and Alex Abrines. They beat the Spain team by 20 points.
Who’s Igor Kokoskov?
Igor Kokoskov has a reputation as one of the most well-rounded coaches in the NBA, as well as one of the most experienced. Quin Snyder calls him one of the most respected offensive minds in the NBA. He is also an excellent skill development coach that is recognized by the veterans in the league.
About Slovenia’s Offense
Kokoskov’s offense has a heavy emphasis on point guard play because he wants his point guard to be making the decisions. Mike D’Antoni and Alvin Gentry call him “one of the brightest minds in the NBA.” Former player Earl Boykins loved Kokoskov’s point guard-focused offense.
He trusts and relies on his point guards offensively. Kokoskov was instrumental with Steve Nash and Goran Dragic. His offense is very efficient in points per game and sharing the basketball.
That is just one part of the 2017 EuroBasket Tournament Playbook! You will learn all the adaptations that you need to implement all these tactics to give your team a chance to score clean lay-ups!
Over 125 plays from the 2017 EuroBasket Tournament! Suprise your opponents with new action after Christmas break!
John Beilein has been called the “guru” of the X’s and O’s.
(I tend to share that opinion.)
After 16 years at the helm, he’s arguably one of the best in the business.
One of the cool things about the Playbook business – plus a little technology – is that we can now get his exact playbook into your hands PRIOR to the game Thursday.
Kinda neat…
And if you’re anything like me...
You like having a little extra insight into how Beilein brings it!
Also, once you grab this book you’ll notice one thing right away…
He keeps it about as simple as it gets.
Even though the playbook come in at 127 pages, it is broken down into only 5 sections:
• Half Court Man Offense
• Half Court Zone Offense
• BLOB’s
• SLOB’s
• Drills
It is beautiful in its simplicity.
I know you’ll enjoy it.
As long as Michigan stays in the tourney, you can own this playbook here.

CBS had a poll this past summer of the NCAA Top Basketball Coaches in the college basketball, and it was voted on by their peers. The NCAA Top Basketball Coaches Playbook has over 300 set plays from the top coaches in the NCAA. This playbook comes from that survey, and you will see some unique styles of play where anyone can get something out of this playbook.
The Michigan Wolverines Head Coach John Beilein runs a Princeton-hybrid offense that uses ball screens and great execution of set plays to flow into their motion offense. Coach Beilein’s original ideas along with NBA & NCAA methods allow his teams to flourish in the NCAA Tournament.
Bo Ryan just retired this past year from the Wisconsin Badgers head job, but his team still runs the legendary swing offense that causes the opposition tons of problem. They run their offense and use counters & set plays to mix it up.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski of the Duke Blue Devils is at the top of the list of successful coaches in NCAA Division 1 history. Coach Mike Krzyzewski has also coached the Olympic nation team to a Gold Medal on more than one occasion. Coach K’s ability to adapt to the changing times is what makes him unique. They use a lot of Horns and Elbow actions that you see in the NBA at Duke right now.
Former Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings runs a similar style of play like John Beilein. Coach Stallings has taken his different offense to the University of Pittsburgh, and I expect him to do great things there. Coach Stallings does an excellent job of blending and adding counters to his motion offense.
Most coaches run set plays, but some of the best offenses are ones that are random and have no pattern. Davidson’s Bob McKillop and BYU’s Dave Rose run different styles of motion but have similar actions with spacing, dribble hand-offs, and ball screens. Notre Dame’s Mike Brey has his own unique style too. All of the coaches bring something different to the table regarding their offense. You can win basketball games a variety of ways.
Here is the breakdown of set plays in this playbook:
• Michigan Wolverines (John Beilein)-80 Set plays
• Davidson Wildcats (Bob McKillop)-35 Set plays
• Wisconsin Badgers (Bo Ryan)-45 Set plays
• Gonzaga Bulldogs (Mark Few)-31 Set plays
• Duke Blue Devils (Mike Krzyzewski)-56 Set plays
• BYU Cougars (Dave Rose)-21 Set plays
• Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Mike Brey)-32 Set plays
• Vanderbilt Commodores (Kevin Stallings)-26 Set plays
Subj: The fastest way to kill the offensive rhythm
Hey Coach,
I’ve expressed in previous emails just how out-and-out excited I get when we can present you with a new playbook…
It’s even better when that playbook details the #1 trend in basketball defense.
Well, release the pigeons and sound the trumpets!
Here we go…
Let’s state this right up front:
Old school logic called the switching defense “soft”.
(It was actually Bobby Knight who led that charge. He HATED it.)
Yet, here we are.
Why?
Because the game and the players have changed significantly since the days of getting the ball to the low post where a Patrick Ewing or Shaq was waiting...
Honestly, how often do you see that style of play anymore?
That approach has been slowly – but surely – displaced by a game of speed with (arguably) more versatile players.
Switching can kill the rhythm of the offense and cause the ball to become sticky.
Offensive players and the ball become stagnant.
So far, so good. Right?
Much of the success on offense stems from having great player and ball movement to break down the defense. The switch can slow this down.
Now it becomes easier for the defense to position themselves properly and guard the offensive action.
What happens then? (I love this part…)
You start daring the offense to beat you over and over again- “Are you good enough to beat us by
making individual plays all night?"
You take defense – which is normally in reactionary mode – and move into a position of MUCH more control.
When executed correctly, you force the offense out of their comfort zone and into a style that suits you and your team.
So, what does the defense of the future look like? You’re looking at it.
And I strongly recommend you understand the switching defense at the deepest level.
Here is step #1.
Our new “Switching Defense” playbook is 66 pages of everything you need to know – and implement.

Does your team need an “NBA-level” turnaround?
Hey Coach!
How do you orchestrate a serious turnaround?
If your team is in need of a shakeup, you need to read every word of this email!
Taking an NCAA team from worst to first is impressive, but let’s face it, athletes graduate, get injured, turn pro, etc. at a much faster pace than the “dynasty-prone” NBA.
That’s just a reality.
The fact that the NBA is so deep in talent and have longer-term contracts makes coming out of nowhere much less likely.
Once a team gets the right formula together, they tend to lock things in for a few years.
But don’t tell the Milwaukee Bucks you can’t make a sudden move!
As sports writer Todd Whitehead put it, Coach Mike Budenholzer “brought their offense into the 21 century”…
But he did more than that, didn’t he…
He took a team that hadn’t won a playoff series since the Bush->Clinton era, and he turned them into the best offense in the NBA.
No small feat.
(Thanks, Captain Obvious!)
Most of you know he was with the Hawks previously, but only when he made the move to the Bucks did things REALLY take off…
If you’d like to see how a team does that in today’s NBA, I’ve got a surprise for you!
I just got the entire Budenholzer-Hawks-Bucks Playbook handed to me. ☺

Featuring both whiteboard diagrams and explanations as well as on-court player demonstrations, this video offers incredible basketball education.
The high scoring Baylor Bears program under Coach Scott Drew and his staff have made it a habit of running some of the most effective scoring actions in the country.
Former Assistant Coach Mark Morefield diagrams and explains 15 great plays that are game proven, road-tested, and hard to guard actions that can get you great shots when there is very little time left on the clock.
We’ve entered the golden age of point guards who can do it all. Score, dish and serve.
I know many come to mind. Players like Curry, Westbrook, Irving, Lillard and Paul to name a few have taken the league by storm. And there's no surprise that every offense goes through the facilitator. Developing Guards is vital to a teams success, they orchestrate the offense as well as facilitate.
Among all the positions on a basketball court, the point guard has the most specialized duties. The point guard must understand the game plan. It is paramount that they create scoring chances for themselves and others, and that they keep their own tempo.
Life is hard for point guards in today's basketball, it's not enough to be a steady, reliable, play it safe distributor. It's an ever changing role that one must adapt to quickly in order to be effective. Failure to do so can result in poor performances, teams coming up short, not making the playoffs, or worse, getting benched or even dropped from the team.
A developing point guard must become proficient in twelve main attributes in order to be successful. First and foremost, a desire to win, the sheer will to win. The ability to focus on others, direct the game plan. Ball handling skills are essential when developing a guard. They must value each and every possession and take care of the ball. The ability to make teammates better by facilitating. A clear understanding of the situation and being able to direct the fast break are just some of the attributes to an elite player.
Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew and Assistant Coach Mark Morefield created a master course focusing on guard development training. In this course, they breakdown specific skill building workouts that helped them set the cornerstone of Baylor Basketball. They cover everything from warm up shooting, commando ball handling, 5 spot shooting to the jab step. Plus many more!
Steve Masiello presents one of the popular trends in the game, the pick & roll. This dangerous action is looked at from both the offensive and defensive perspective. The pick & roll is the best offensive weapon in today’s game. It is also the most difficult to defend. Steve Masiello examines screening angles and how to defend each screen & roll.
Highlights:
4 Ways to Defend the Pick and Roll
-Blitz and Get over
-Downing
-Switching
-Trapping

OK, now that the Super Bowl is over and the endless analysis fading, attention will slowly turn back to the court.
March Madness is looming on the horizon…
One of the teams expected to be there happens to have one of the top defenses in the country. Period. And there’s a reason for that…
The man at the helm is Head Coach Tony Bennett.
(You may know that his father, Dick Bennett was the man who created the Pack Line Defense.)
Well… It just so happens, we now have this new playbook: “Encyclopedia of Pack Line Defense”.
This just-released playbook contains EVERYTHING you need to know about this incredibly effective approach – as it is employed by Coach Bennett at UV.
From key areas to positions and techniques to drills covering multiple scenarios…it’s all here.
Over 70 pages of Pack Line Defense expertise!
Remember: Even if you don’t use the Pack Line Defense…you will undoubtedly have to face it.
Be ready! Committed to your success!
Coach Scott Peterman
P.S. Having this defensive playbook – as used by the guys at the top – is a fantastic opportunity.

Coaches,
I am proud to release the Orlando Magic Playbook 2009-2010: “Learn the Stan Van Gundy Style of Play for the Orlando Magic”. It is a 121 Page Playbook that has 80 plays that the Orlando Magic used this past NBA Season. It has 7 zone offenses, 16 Blobs, 10 Slobs, 42 Half-court sets, and 5 After Time-Out Plays.
I hope that you enjoy these NBA Sets. Some of the best slobs and blobs in basketball come from the NBA. The NBA is the leader in pick and roll offense so you have a chance to spice up your playbook.
Coach Peterman
I have had multiple requests for a playbook that will spice up your post plays and tweak some of your offensive sets. I decided to look into the most consistent N.B.A. Franchise in the last decade. It is the San Antonio Spurs who have won the World Championship in 99, 03, 05, and 07
Coach Gregg Popovich’s “San Antonio Spurs” use an offense that is mostly built on the perimeter, but they exploit the skills of Tim Duncan, an all-around player who can play close or away from the basket at a medium shooting distance. The Offense is built on the offensive penetrations of their guard that lead to 3 point shooting opportunities. It also have a wide array of pick-n-roll plays in their offense.
This N.B.A. Power Post Offense Playbook has:
90 Set Plays
2 Zone Offense
1 Sideline Out of Bounds play
1 Baseline Out of Bounds play
I really do think that this playbook will be able to tweak your set plays up with some interesting looks. You will be able to involve your guards as well as your post players.

The making of Brad Stevens: Butler University to the Boston Celtics
Hi Coach,
Today I dive into one of the “A List” coaches that I follow closely…
Brad Stevens.
But here’s the thing, the media consistently portrays Stevens as a coach of the “underdog”.
I’m not sure I agree.
Here’s why…
How long can you consistently produce great results before people stop hanging the ‘underdog’ tag on you and just give you straight up kudos for being one of the best in the game?
(my humble opinion)
Great coaches do great work with whatever tools they have at their disposal.
Such was the case when Coach Stevens was at Butler.
I lump Butler into the same category as Gonzaga (I will acknowledge the underdog theme here!)
People LOVE to see these two teams give the juggernaut teams fits.
Am I right?
People follow Butler closely…waiting for that “improbable” run at tournament time.
And Stevens was the guy largely responsible for Butler’s consistently strong runs…taking them to two NCAA Championship Games during his brief six-year run there.
Very impressive stuff.
In Boston, he’s made the injury-riddled Celtics a perennial playoff team…
Known for his creative play-calling, he’s even been called an “ATO Genius”.
No argument here.
Seeing as I’m an obvious fan of the guy, I thought I would dig into how he got to be the coach he is.
I’ve done the research and put together an exhaustive playbook for you.
I call it, “Butler University Bulldogs: Brad Stevens Years”.
Here’s how I came at it…
7 major sections—each based upon a specific game.
I went a little crazy…so it came out to 130 pages. ☺
Each section is about 20 pages of detailed play breakdown. (The exception is the Old Dominion game, which is shorter).
You’re gonna love the insight here into one of the freshest and most creative guys out there.
Value-wise. This one’s a hell of a deal…I just had to do right by my guy!
See you courtside,
Scott Peterman
Hey Coach!
I’m super excited today!
And if you looked closely at the subject line, you know why…
Not only do I have a brand-new, never-before-released playbook, but I just LOVE the theme behind it.
You see, every year, the NCAA goes through its annual “shell game” as coaches get shuffled around, fired, hired, they quit…the whole thing.
This year was particularly raucous…
From Alabama to Washington State, big changes are ahappenin’.
Transitions were going on everywhere.
As we know, transitions can be good or bad.
Some programs out there need to wipe the slate clean and start over, whereas others are looking for someone to come in, keep things calm and maintain what’s in place.
Either way, it’s no easy task.
Sports Illustrated agreed and put it this way…
“A sweeping set of coaching changes shifted the college basketball landscape this summer, by now a customary offseason ritual, but also one which highlights a number of programs in transition. A wide number of high-major jobs opened up, and a fascinating mix of head coaches took over at new programs.”
So true.
I thought you’d like an inside look at what some of the teams you know and love are going to look like, once some of these coaches come in and put their unique stamp on things.
So…
Are you ready?
The new playbook is called “2019-2020 Faces in New Places Playbook”
This is 215 pages on X’s and O’s from some old faces, as well as some stars on the rise! And you can get the chance to say “I’ve been reading about this guy for years.”
Here’s the list of coaches we’ve featured inside:
Nate Oats - Alabama Crimson Tide
Eric Musselman: Arkansas Razorbacks
Mark Pope: BYU Cougars
John Brannen: Cincinnati Bearcats
Juwan Howard: Michigan Wolverines
Aaron McKie: Temple Owls
Jerry Stackhouse: Vanderbilt Commodores
Mike Young: Virginia Tech Hokies
Kyle Smith: Washington State Cougars
For less than 20 bucks you can see where these programs are going and make your own predictions about how well they’ll do, based upon these breakdowns.
At 215 pages, you know there’s a ton of information inside that you likely haven’t seen before, because some of these guys are just now moving up the ladder.

Your multi-media solution to “Attacking the Switch”
A recent analysis concluded:
“Modern basketball has moved away from a one-on-one play, and toward a more dynamic style centered around pick-and-rolls.
The league is becoming more skilled: more shooting and more passing from more positions mean that offenses benefit more from movement and screening, and defenses have fewer choices to defend these actions without giving up something good.”
Every once in a while I read something that makes me stop and ‘take stock’ of my thought process.
The above quote was one of those times…
This was a solid, simple summary of where the game is clearly headed.
So I paused and asked myself…
Am I doing enough for my players with regard to getting THEM ready for an evolving style of play?
And then I went a step further and wondered: Am I doing right by YOU (my fellow coaches) along these lines?
As I mulled this over, it occurred to me that a “big picture” thought like this deserves a unique approach as a solution.
Obviously, it’s crucial that all of us, as coaches, don’t get bogged down in outdated thinking.
So why don’t I take the lead here and put together a complete solution?!
And that’s exactly what I did. ☺
I took a ‘multi-media’ approach to this one.
First, I wrote a new playbook called – simply enough – “Attacking the Switch”.
This Playbook is a full 65 pages long!
…but here is where things get even better…
Next, I did a bit of research with my colleagues over at CoachTube, and put together no less than 78 videos as the ideal supplement to my playbook!
(Me working with CoachTube is kinda like one of those ‘crossover events’ you see on TV where one show’s characters appear in the storyline of another show…sorta)
Anywhoo,
If the analysis above is correct – and I think simple observation says it is – then we need to be have a complete solution in place, so all of us can stay on top of our game.
This is that solution.
This collection creates the opportunity to throw sand in the offense’s gears, taking them out of their flow, and making them play a slower, grittier, uglier style of basketball.
The cost of this through “Attack the Switch” coaching product is only $25.00.
(Hey, we are here to keep everyone progressing forward, so we felt strongly that we didn’t want lack of resources standing in the way…)

Running Time: 38 Minutes.
Hey Coach!
I’m shifting gears on ya!
Admittedly, I’ve been hyper-focused on the defense lately.
It’s time to turn the ball over…as it were.
And I’m doing it with a brand new playbook!
I also think I started with the right guy…
Dana Altman may not get the same press as guys like Hall-of-Famers Mike Krzyzewski and Tom Izzo, but are you up to speed on his stats?
Coach Altman is one of only six active coaches in NCAA Division I with 22 consecutive winning seasons. (This group includes Krzyzewski and Izzo of course.)
He is the 34th head coach to record 600 career wins at the Division I level, and is the winningest head coach in Oregon history. In 2016-17, Altman led Oregon back to the Final Four for the first time in 78 years.
In addition to being 3 time Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
Works for me…
Anyway, here’s how I came at this one…it’s a bit different.
It’s called simply enough—Oregon Ducks Spread Offense. I broke this one down into 5 sections.
Sections 2-5 are game breakdowns:
Arizona State
Washington
UC Irvine
And Virginia.
Not a bad group I’d say…
But what I really think you’re going to like is section 1.
(The whole thing is 115 total pages, btw!)
In this first section, I dive into things like:
10 Rules for Developing Offense
Philosophy (not enough time is spent here, in my humble opinion)
And then things like:
Spacing
Dribble entry
UNC break
Pinch Post
And a LOT more…
I like this approach and believe the end result is a much more “complete” playbook for you.
I suspect you’re going to like it, as well.
I wanted this to be something you’d want to print off and start to implement with your players ASAP.
So, if you’re looking to that little offensive “jolt” and think the Spread Offense could be the solution, grab this one ASAP.
See you courtside,
Scott “Spreading the love” Peterman
Ettore Messina is one of the winningest coaches in Euroleague History. He is a modern coach who is always innovative and re-inventing himself to be one of the best.
Ettore Messina became Virtus Bologna’s head coach at the end of the 1990’s and took the basketball team to its glory days, winning two Euroleague titles in 1998 and 2001, the 1990 Saporta Cup, three Italian league championships and four Italian Cup trophies.
Coach Ettore Messina moved to Benetton Treviso and won the Italian league crown, two Italian Cups and reached the 2003 Euroleague final in just three years. He has coached twice with CSKA Moscow, the first time he won the Russian league and Cup double four times and led the club to the 2006 and 2008 Euroleague trophies, reaching two other Euroleague finals in 2007 and 2009.
Coach Ettore Messina is one of the few European coaches that is always speculated with vacant NBA coaching jobs. He has had discussions with the Sacramento Kings, Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, and Atlanta Hawks. He joined Mike Brown’s coaching staff as a consultant to the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2012, Ettore Messina decided to leave the Lakers and returned to CSKA Moscow to be their head coach again.
Coach Ettore Messina is on the Top 50 Greatest Basketball Contributors list for the Euroleague. He is one of the top international coaches worldwide.
“All coaches pay great attention to detail, to teaching, in breaking everything down. The difference is only the individual way in which to approach basketball that distinguishes one philosophy from the other.”
What is it about the basketball that is currently being played in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague that you would most like to transmit to fellow coaches around the world?
Competitiveness. Every possession is extremely important. Every possession is being played by the actors in the game as if it were the last in the season. There is no possibility to rest, no possibility to hold back, everyone must give 100% every day, every moment, every game.
If you’re a coach, how good are you at “future pacing”?
Let me explain…
You know that sick feeling you can get when you think everyone else is up to speed on something, but you’ve somehow been left on the outside looking in?
It’s not fun.
You have this gaping knowledge gap and you feel silly.
You feel like everyone in the room knows something you don’t.
Well, today’s email is a bit unusual in that sense.
It’s not a playbook.
It’s not a video.
It’s not a collection of random tools for your coaching toolbox.
This is something beyond that…and something I’ve never done before.
Today we fill a knowledge gap.
We’re actually doing something called “future pacing”…
This is a fancy way of saying you’re looking into the future, and seeing where things are going BEFORE they happen.
Sounds like a cool skill to have doesn’t it?
I turned to basketball playbook expert and “trend watcher” Chis Filios to put something together, the likes of which you have NOT seen previously.
Chris is a student of the game like few others…
And what he’s put together could be considered a “meta” playbook, if that makes sense.
Looking beyond the basic X’s and O’s and seeing the higher-level trends in the game.
Specifically, the defensive side of the game.
It’s called “Defensive Trends In College Basketball”…which frankly undersells what it’s all about.
In this playbook, you will find many of the latest defensive trends in basketball- from the NBA to Europe to college. Some of the best defensive teams in the world like the Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Valencia, Angola, Texas Tech, and many more are coming up with new schemes and “modernizing” old ones to fit how today’s game is played.
Some specifics:
Modern twist on a classic- the “modern no middle”
Both basic and complex switching techniques for on-ball defense- “switch outs”, “jump switches”, “Ice” coverage, area switches
Advanced techniques on situational coverages against elite shooters and high level individual scores- situational hard denial, hip recovery forced drives, outside shoulder forced curls, denial of the boomerang pass, late clock iso run and doubles
New concepts in rotational defense- “Peel Switching” and “Jump Switches”
Did I grab your attention with this?
I certainly hope so…
If you also consider yourself a “student of the game” like Chris Filios, I can’t recommend this resource enough.
If you want to be comfortable with what’s coming…if you want to “future pace” so you’re ahead of the curve and NOT playing catch up, this is for you.
Never have that “on the outside looking in” feeling again…well, with basketball anyway ☺ .
Here’s the opportunity to something truly unique.
You’ll be happy you did.
See you courtside!

Click on the Faces in New Places 2017 Playbook today! It has 200 pages of basketball coaching information in this playbook.
At the end of every season, the news that dominates everyone’s attention is the coaching carousel. Who is getting fired? Who is getting hired? What coaches are leaving one job for another? What will the trickle down effect be?
For some coaches, they are looking to move up the ladder. For some, they are looking to get their first head-coaching job. Today, there is a lack of job security in coaching. So in some cases, a veteran coach will go for a change of scenery in hopes of more money, more security, or a return to a place they call home or their dream job. Whatever the situation, with the coaching change comes culture, philosophy, and tactical change.
This season, there are a number of coaching moves that have piqued my interest.
In the “Faces in New Places 2017” playbook, we examine 9 coaches who moved from one head-coaching job to another. The playbook features 190 plays from both veteran and rising coaches: Brad Underwood (Oklahoma State),
Bryce Drew (Vanderbilt), Chris Beard (Texas Tech), Jamie Dixon (TCU), Jerod Haase (Stanford), Josh Pastner (Georgia Tech), Kevin Stallings (Pitt), Steve Pikiell (Rutgers), and Tubby Smith (Memphis). These coaches have combined to win over 2,000 games in their careers and over 65% of their games.
Implement the man and zone sets, as well as baseline line out of bounds plays, that these coaches are utilizing to help push their new programs to higher levels of success.
We’ll see if these veterans can continue to have success at their new schools.
I am excited to announce the release of my newest ebook: “International Offensive Basketball Strategies: “Learn from the best coaches in the Euroleague, Eurocup, and Beyond”. I have spent a lot of time and energy breaking down set plays, transition sets, sideline out of bounds plays, and baseline out of bounds plays. I have really been interested in Ettore Messina (Formerly – C.S.K.A. Moscow, now Real Madrid). I have found out that there are some tremendous basketball coaches in the United States as well as abroad. I became extremely interested in their teachings once I started to view their games. I hope that you enjoy this ebook.
What is Euroleague? Here is the definition from Wikipedia:
“The Euroleague (EL) is the highest level and most important professional basketball competition in Europe, with teams from up to 18 different European countries. The competition is operated by ULEB, a Europe-wide consortium of leading professional basketball leagues. Clubs from Turkey, mostly located in Asia, and Israel, entirely within Asia, are also part of the system.
The league usually, but not always, includes domestic champions from the leading countries. Depending on the country, places in the Euroleague may be awarded on the basis of:
• Performance in the previous season’s domestic league.
• Performance over the previous two or three domestic seasons.
• Contracts with ULEB.
• In addition, the winner of the previous season’s Eurocup receives a place.
For example, two 2007-08 domestic champions from ULEB member countries did not compete in the 2008-09 Euroleague—Zadar (Croatia) and Hapoel Holon (Israel). Zadar played in the second-level Eurocup in 2008-09. Hapoel Holon, however, did not compete in any of the three European continental club competitions—not even the third-tier EuroChallenge (which is run by FIBA Europe instead of ULEB).
Starting with the 2009–10 season, the entrance criteria have been dramatically changed:
Thirteen clubs, chosen via a formula based on competitive performance, television revenues, and home attendance, receive “A Licences”, giving them automatic entry into the Euroleague Regular Season phase. A Licences are awarded for three years, meaning that the next adjustment of A Licences will not take place until 2012–13.
• Eight clubs receive one-year “B Licences” into the Euroleague Regular Season. Seven of them are directly based on the ranking of the domestic league in which the club competes. The eighth is a three-year “wildcard” licence based on similar factors to the A Licences; the first such licence was awarded to ASVEL Basket of France.
• The winner of the previous year’s Eurocup receives a one-year “C Licence” into the Euroleague Regular Season. If the club qualifies for a direct B Licence into the Regular Season via its domestic league, the C Licence will be awarded to the club not already qualified for the Regular Season that is highest on the Euroleague entry list.
• Eight other clubs receive one-year “B Licences” into the Euroleague qualifying rounds, with two advancing into the Regular Season. ”
Example of the Playbook:
So what you will be viewing:
69 Set Plays
7 Transition Sets
2 Sideline out of bounds plays
2 Baseline out of bounds plays
These sets come from 14 Euroleague teams, 8 Eurocup teams, and many other club teams across Europe.

If you love pick and roll basketball then this ebook will be great for you. It made me start thinking about different ways to attack basketball teams and expand my offensive views. You will be viewing some of the best set plays that Europe has to offer.
Coach Peterman
Coaches,
I am proud to present the “Triangle Offense Playbook” to you. I have taken the best ideas of the triangle offense that was run in Chicago and Los Angeles and put them together.
Definition according to wikipedia on Triangle Offense :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triangle_offense
“The Triangle Offense, also known as the Triple-Post offense, is an offensive strategy in basketball. Its basic ideas were initially established by Hall of Fame coach Sam Barry at the University of Southern California. His system was later refined by former Kansas State University head basketball coach and current Los Angeles Lakers consultant Tex Winter, who played for Barry in the late 1940s.
The system’s most important feature is the sideline triangle created between the center, who stands at the low post; the forward, at the wing, and the guard at the corner. The team’s other guard stands at the top of the key and the weak-side forward is on the weak-side high post — together forming the “two-man game”.
The goal of the offense is to fill those five spots, which creates good spacing between players and allows each one to pass to four teammates. Every pass and cut has a purpose and everything is dictated by the defense.”
It is an offense that can be run when you don’t have great post players. The Chicago Bulls had Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, but not a great post player. If you have post players like the Los Angeles Lakers do with Paul Gasol and Andrew Bynum then you could incorporate it. Just watch the NBA Finals and see for yourself.
This playbook has 40 Different Actions, 35 Different Set Plays, and 25 Out of bound Plays consisting of blobs, slobs, or last second plays. It has 100 different plays and is over 100 pages long. If you want to add a wrinkle from the Triangle offense then here you go. If you want to incorporate the whole thing. You will have it also.
I hope that you enjoy this playbook.
Coach Peterman
Are you looking for an offense that is built on versatility? Do you have a roster of players that are interchangeable? Do you lack a real low post threat? Then the Spread Offense Playbook is for you.
The Spread Offense is a position-less offense that is perfect for teams that have interchangeable pieces that excel at all spots and big men that are skilled, who can drive, pass, and shoot. It can be a matchup nightmare for opponents. It is designed to spread the defense out, pulls opponents, big men, away from the rim, makes them guard on the perimeter, and take advantage of mismatches.
In this Spread Offense playbook, you will receive 90 pages of Spread Offense from two of the hottest coaches in the NCAA- Oklahoma State’s Brad Underwood and Oregon’s Dana Altman.
Brad Underwood has used the Spread Offense to rise in his head-coaching career. Underwood came to OSU following a three-year stay at Stephen F. Austin that ranks as one of the best starts to a head-coaching career in college basketball history. With his most recent NCAA Tournament run at SFA, Underwood improved his career record to 89-14, tied with Coach Brad Stevens for the most wins by a head coach in his first three seasons at a NCAA school. While winning three consecutive Southland Conference Coach of the Year titles, Coach Brad Underwood led SFA Lumberjacks to the two longest winning streaks in Southland Conference history. Coach Underwood piled up a 53-1 record in conference play during his three years in Nacogdoches, Texas. Coach Underwood was on every athletic director’s list that was hiring coaches when his team beat the VCU Rams in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Coach Underwood was known for defensive at SFA, but they had a great assist-oriented offense there. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are currently ranked second in the country in Adjusted Offense at 125.3 points per 100 possessions.
Dana Altman’s Oregon Ducks have ranked in the top ten and one win away from winning the Pac 12 Conference in back to back seasons. Coach Altman has 19 consecutive winning season and is in elite status from doing just that. The only coaches that have completed that task are Tom Izzo, Roy Williams, Bill Self, Jim Boeheim, and Mike Krzyzewski. Coach Altman won more games in his six seasons at Oregon than any other coach. He is 154-64 at Oregon and 564-307 for his career at Marshall, Kansas State, Creighton, and Oregon. He has guided the Ducks to six 20 win seasons, and that includes four consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Coach Altman’s teams have been in the Elite Eight and two sweet sixteen appearances.
Get the offensive ideas of two of the best offensive coaches in the country and improve your team’s offensive versatility today.
Mike Dunlap is renowned in basketball coaching circles for his D2 Championships, his NBA experience and his work in the Big East, Pac 12 and international leagues. This Dvd takes a detailed look at a critical component to the success of any basketball team. Coach Dunlap breaks down the defensive transition into seven key areas. Also included are several primary drills that Coach Dunlap (St. John’s University) used when working on the defensive transition. The DVD contains quality practice footage which helps to illustrate the points that are being made. This is an excellent DVD that would be an asset to men’s and women’s coaches of all levels.
As you know by now… the Cavaliers are #1 for the first time since 1982, with Coach Tony Bennett leading the charge.

A Match-Up Zone is a defensive strategy in which the defense starts in a zone formation, but plays the offensive players man to man when they enter the defensive player’s area. There is no one in the defensive player’s area then he usually stays true to his one.
Former Temple University Coach John Chaney was well known for his match-up zone defense. It is said that offenses had a hard time telling what his match-up zone defense was because they disguised it and conformed it to the offensive formation of the opposing team.
I have watched tons of NBA Basketball teams and believed that this match-up zone is the ultimate match-up zone defense. I believe that is the case because it deals with every scenario when it comes to a ball screen and all the different pick and rolls.
This match-up zone defense will help develop your player’s communication, stop great scorers, great scoring teams, employ man defense principles, and be difficult to scout. It can be used with big and small teams.
This NBA Match-up Zone can be utilized on the College and High School levels with ease. You will have the ability to confuse your opponents with a new wrinkle in the late half of the basketball season and especially for the play-offs.
You will understand how to “match-up” and cause confusion for the zone offense. It will disrupt their offensive flow.
I hope that you enjoy this “Ultimate” Match-up Zone Defense Playbook and that it produces wins for you in the play-offs.
When Lebron calls you a “genius”, people take notes
There was a good bit of focus on the Boston Celtics this week…not all of it positive.
Kemba Walker had a really awkward collision with a teammate Semi Ojeleye. Hitting Semi in the chest and bending his neck at a scary angle. He’ll be OK and fortunately joined the team for the flight home.
I’m guessing most of you saw the play.
But there were some tense moments for sure, and his diagnosis was positive for a concussion…
Anyway, as I was reading the coverage of the incident, I came across some additional—and completely unrelated—articles.
(I’ve mentioned on more than one occasion that I have a soft spot in my heart for the Celtics, so I found myself going off on a reading tangent.)
Several of the articles focused on one truly impressive trait on display by Head Coach Brad Stevens.
In fact, Lebron James made sure his opinion was publicly known…
He called Brad Stevens a “genius” at this particular skill (his actual words).
No small compliment coming from one of the all-time greats.
This skill?
ATO plays.
After reading LeBron’s quote, I went off on yet another tangent…
And here’s where you get to benefit. 😊
I started reviewing clips…
Taking some notes…
Sketching some diagrams…
And next thing you know, I’ve got a collection of no less that 95 ATO plays designed by Coach Stevens.
Think about this…
How many times are you watching a game and the final 1 to 3 seconds depends ENTIRELY on an ATO play?
I mean, the W or the L depends of the play call. It happens like a gazillion times per season. Right?
High school, college, NBA…it doesn’t matter.
ATO plays win games.
So…
Being the clever guy I am, I figured learning from a genius at this skill might be as interesting to you as it was to me.
Am I right?
So here you go…

The title says it all – this a multi-dimensional approach to both offense and defense drilling that adds the most important aspect of all – competition via time and score. Utilizing a rapid fire 3-on-3 half-court approach, Coach Mike Dunlap details how to use this drill to Teach Offense and to Teach Defense through dry running, and ultimately Competition. Rewarding proper actions and penalizing negative actions via the whistle, and by adding elements and emphasizing various points during the course of the actions, any coach can fine-tune the basics to fit his teachings and his personnel. This is a player-favorite and success-proven drill that can be used at any level of the game.

Chris Collins is a coach on the rise. In his fourth year at the helm, he has the Northwestern Wildcats Basketball Program on the doorstep of history and the fan base more excited than ever. Their exhilaration stems from the sad fact that Northwestern is the only power conference school that has never made the NCAA tournament.
In Collins’ first three years at the helm, he has led Northwestern to an increased win total each season.
In the 2015-16 season, the Wildcats establish a school regular-season record 20 wins, including eight wins in Big Ten Conference play. Three of the Big Ten wins were by 20 or more points, marking the first time a Northwestern team posted three league wins by 20+ points since the 1943-44 season.
Everywhere Collins has coached and played, there is a common theme, winning. He both coached and played under one of the greatest coaches of all time- Mike Krzyzewski. During Collins’ 13 seasons on the Blue Devils’ staff, Duke posted an overall record of 385-77 while recording eight ACC tournament championships, four ACC regular-season titles, eight in-season tournament titles and national championships in 2001 and 2010. I want to introduce the newest eBook in the Basketball Secrets Unleashed: NBA Princeton Offense Playbook. It is a playbook comprised of NBA Princeton sets from the New Jersey Nets, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards of the NBA. It isn’t an ebook designed to “install the princeton offense”. It has 103 sets that are run by these teams. It doesn’t have the drills to run the Princeton Offense.
Example Princeton Offense sets:
NBA Princeton Playbook
This NBA Princeton Playbook is a playbook designed from how the Princeton Offense is run in the NBA. All of the ideas came from teams that ran the Princeton offense. The plays came from the teams that has used the Princeton offense.
The Princeton Offense is known for strongly emphasizing the fundamentals of good shooting, passing, and back-door cuts. The offense takes a high level of basketball intelligence to run it. It is a five part play that takes fifteen seconds to run. The goal of the Princeton offense isn’t to run clock. The goal is to break down the defense, because of lack of discipline on defense. The Princeton off works against both man and zone defenses, and not just against man defense.
The NBA Princeton offense is different than typically run Princeton offenses. This playbook has typical NBA sets like post-up and pick-n-roll sets. It is the mixture of sets that help the NBA athletes along with the combination of Princeton principles that work on any level.
Before the 2001 season, the New Jersey Nets were coming off a 26-56 losing season. They went from an East Coast Conference doormat to the NBA finals. They finished 13th in scoring in the NBA and had five starters averaging double figures.
Sports Illustrated: “The Princeton offense is old-style basketball. Dribble, pass and shoot. I always thought it’s the way the game was supposed to be played.”
The strength of the offense is about being unselfish and the fact that everyone touches the ball. You can tweak the offense as much as you want to tweak it, but it helps everyone succeed. It has a lot of movement and even if one player is scoring, the other four players play a huge role in helping that process.
The positions of the offense are two guards, two forwards, and a center. The guard and forward spots are interchangeable; the center is the only position that is not. The offense revolves around the center and he doesn’t have to be a low block scorer. In the Princeton offense, there are always counter attacks. If they take away one option then there is always another option.
Washington Wizards head in 200l and put the Princeton offense in their attack. Here are the results from their scoring:
2003-04: 18th in the NBA in scoring (91.8 PPG)
2004-05: 6th in the NBA in scoring (100.5 PPG)
2005-06: 3rd in the NBA in scoring (101.7)
Table of Contents:
Half-court sets: 74 Plays
Early Offense: 5 Plays
Pick & Roll: 10 Plays
Post-Up sets: 14 Plays
Total: 103 Plays
I hope that you enjoy this playbook and you are able to use the Princeton offense for your team this season or just get a couple new ideas/wrinkles for your team.
Coach Peterman
Disclaimer: The eBook was not written by Pete Carril, Bryon Scott, or Eddie Jordan. I compiled notes and video footage from the Sacramento Kings, New Jersey Nets, and Washington Wizards.
Packline Defense Rules are an effective strategy to beat it!
What are the Pack-Line Defense Rules?
The Pack-Line Defense Rules are an offensive basketball strategy that can be employed to beat the effectiveness of this defense. The pack-line defense rules are layed out in this 180 page “Attack the Pack” Playbook.
What is the Pack-Line Defense?
Dick Bennett made the Pack-line defense famous when he coached for the Washington State University Cougars, and his son Tony Bennett uses it now. Several other NCAA D1 coaches that use the pack-line defense are Chris Mack (Xavier) and Sean Miller (Arizona)
What is the Pack-Line Defense trying to accomplish?
The pack line defense pressures the basketball while the other four defensive men stay inside a line around the 17-foot mark away from the basket. The off-ball defensive members try to give help on dribble-drive and stop the kick and shoot. Too many coaches think that they can shoot enough three-point shots to beat the pack-line defense. The Pack defenders try to play cutters and screens with passion and try to force a slower tempo with fewer offensive possessions.
You will want to buy this “Attack the Pack” Playbook! Most high schools run some version of the pack-line defense. Don’t you want to know what to do when the pack-line defense is physical and well-positioned with your team?
It’s no fun to play the pack-line defense, but now you will know how to attack it. Check it out today!

Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics aren’t using one particular system like the Princeton Offense or Read & React Offense. They are using parts of all the best systems and piecing it together to make it all original.
Pete Carril associates to the Princeton Offense, just like Tex Winter with the Triangle Offense. Phil Jackson is known for using the Triangle offense when he coached with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.
This Brad Stevens Half Court Offense uses a ton of-of attack options with the best thing being ball movement. The Half Court Offense starts when they begin each possession.
The Triangle Offense and Princeton Offense have a post player and guard on the weak side. The other players are on the strong side and can pass the ball to the weak side position player who would trigger a two man game. The other players would make a series of movement that isolates the wing, which is usually the best player.
The Triangle Offense won because they would usually have skilled basketball players like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant playing in that system. They were best in isolation.
Brad Stevens doesn’t have great players on his team. He got creative and had come up with an incredibly uptempo game plan that is very effective against today’s NBA defense. Most NBA teams run the (ICE) defense on the pick & roll. The Boston Celtics Offense was created to use his player’s strengths and not their weaknesses. Pace and Space are what most NBA analysts call Brad Steven’s Offense.
Pace and Space
Pace means the tempo of the basketball game. Pace also means the number of offensive possession in an NBA game being 48 minutes. The Boston Celtics played at the fifth highest speed last season. They averaged 98.4 possessions every 48 minutes.
Space means the team’s ability to stretch out the defense on offense. You have to maximize your spacing to get three point options on the floor. If you can draw post defenders outside the lane, then you will open up the paint for cutters and higher percentage shots near the basket.
Brad Stevens used his “Pace and Space” Offense to make one of the league’s most exciting offenses out there. They are extremely efficient in scoring while they have a limited team in overall talent. The Boston Celtics were able to land an NBA playoff berth last year.
The NBA Three-Point Options
Stretch Four Post Players are getting more common in the NBA. They can bring their defender out on the floor and make the defense spaced out. If you have a stretch four that can shoot the ball, then you will win HUGE.
This Pace and Space Offense will have something that you can use on your team to create space and play winning basketball. Check it out today! You will want this basketball coaching playbook in your coaching library. Make sure to check out Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics this season.
At the end of every season, the news that dominates everyone’s attention is the coaching carousel. Who is getting fired? Who is getting hired? What coaches are leaving one job for another? What will the trickle-down effect be?
For some coaches, they are looking to move up the ladder. For some, they are looking to get their first head-coaching job. Today, there is a lack of job security in coaching. So in some cases, a veteran coach will go for a change of scenery in hopes of more money, more security, or a return to a place they call home or their dream job. Whatever the situation, with the coaching change, comes culture, philosophy, and tactical change.
In the “Faces in New Places 2016” playbook, we examine 9 coaches who moved from one head-coaching job to another. The playbook features 226 plays from both veteran and rising coaches: Avery Johnson (Alabama), Ben Howland (Mississippi State), Bobby Hurley (Arizona State), Chris Mullin (St. John’s), Mike White (Florida), Rick Barnes (Tennessee), Shaka Smart (Texas), Steve Prohm (Iowa State), and Will Wade (VCU).
Implement the man and zone sets, as well as baseline line out of bounds plays, that these coaches are utilizing to help push their new programs to higher levels of success.
A defensive star rises: [The Yaklich Story]
Sometimes it’s kinda cool to see “one of your own” go all the way to the top.
This is one of those stories.
Many of you know the tale of Luke Yaklich.
Seven or eight years ago, he was a high school teacher…like so many of us.
But by mastering one particular skill set, he clawed his way up to Michigan Basketball.
Then the winds of fortune blew…
Pieces shuffled on the collegiate and NBA chessboard…
John Beilein makes the jump to the Cleveland Cavaliers (still inexplicable to me, but whatever).
Coach Yaklich takes this opportunity to jump over to work with Shaka Smart at Texas. “Associate Head Coach” is the official title…
How quickly things change…
Anyway, it’s pretty plain to see the incredible job he did – in just two short years – running the defense for Michigan.
In his own words…
“I think that’s where it starts with me,” Yaklich said this week. “I love defense and I let that show. I’m able to be myself and so that passion I have for defense, I’m able to exhibit that and be myself every day.”
Opportunity seized.
Clearly, he’s one of the rising stars of collegiate coaching.
So, I thought it would make sense to document the rise…
So here it is.
The complete Michigan Defensive Playbook – Luke Yaklich-style!
Make no mistake, there’s a lesson to be learned here…
Coach Yaklich rode a single focused passion to the top of the game.
And we’ve put together 80+ pages of his finest work (yes, we scouted both Michigan seasons) into one playbook for you.
This is something you’re going to want to study front to back, trust me on this.

Today, you have a chance to learn the Corner Offense. The corner’s greatest hits have resided in NBA playbooks for years. Rick Adelman has run a read-and-react corner offense successfully for years in Sacramento and Houston, and many of its basic tenets can be found in the Triangle. Corner sets feature a three-man formation on one side of the floor with two players positioned on the weak side. As much as anything else, good corner systems rely on big men with multiple skills who can facilitate the offense at the elbow. Think Vlade Divac, Chris Webber, Pau Gasol, Luis Scola and Brad Miller.

Can the Barnes-Vols approach work for you?
We all saw what Head Coach Rick Barnes did at Tennessee in 2019 after just 4 seasons.
Crazy good numbers.
At one point this past season they sat at No. 1 in the rankings for the first time in over a decade.
Check out these stats also from this year:
The Volunteers had the nation’s second most efficient offense!
They averaged 1.168 points EVERY time they were on offense (ranked 4th)
They averaged 20.1 assists per game (ranked 2nd)
But, there’s a part of this story many coaches overlook…
When a coach is as far along in his D1 career as Rick Barnes, you don’t often see noticeable changes in how they do things.
By this point, most coaches are VERY set in their ways, have defined systems. Something pretty radical would have to happen in order for them to toss out their tried-and-true philosophies.
Right?
Well, that’s what Coach Barnes did. (Okay, so it may not have been a complete overhaul, but it was clearly powerful enough for opposing teams to sit up and take notice.)
Anyway…
What was his trigger?
Maybe being shown the door after 17 years at Texas?
(It’s hard to think of Rick Barnes and NOT think of the Texas Longhorns and his 14 consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament.)
Maybe that was it...it’s hard to say for sure.
All I know is that Davidson-inspired, Barnes-refined offense kicked butt this year!
And it’s something you need to take a loooooong look at.
So…
Guess what I have for you today?
100 pages of solid gold.
77 different looks as part of the brand new Tennessee Vols Playbook!
Keep in mind, most coaches will dig in their heels and refuse to adapt like Barnes did…that doesn’t mean you have to.
He turned things around in just 4 years, against the toughest competition in the country.
Imagine what you can do!
If you’re looking for that “turnaround plan”, would it not make sense to take a page from the guy who did exactly that at the highest level?
Probably.
I guarantee you’re going to love this one.
You can get it here: Tennessee Vols Playbook!

Yes, I want to get ahold of the Tennessee Playbook
Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in the NCAA, and this playbook includes all of his half-court sets and quick hitters from the last few seasons. Tom Izzo has one of the deepest playbooks with multiple sets for every type of player. He designs his sets with a 2-big philosophy, as he recruits good post players who can play together at Michigan State.
Who is Bobby Hurley?
Bobby Hurley is the NCAA’s all-time assist leader and former point guard for Duke that won a national championship in 1991 and 1992. He played for Coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University.
It looks like Coach Hurley is once again running one of the best shows in college basketball. Arizona State University is ranked fourth in the Associated Press Top 25. They didn’t get one vote in the preseason ranking which is understandable after the Sun Devils have been 30-35 in the last two years.
This season the Sun Devils are 12-1, and their only loss was to Arizona which is a conference rival and callous game. The Arizona State University Sun Devils beat Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse which never happens.
About the Arizona State University Sun Devils Offense?
Coach Hurley has his players playing fast, shooting a lot of threes and averaging 91.8 points per game. They have four wins over teams ranked in the top 50 (Kansas, St. John’s, Xavier, and Kansas State).
The Sun Devils are playing a new freewheeling style, turning around their program, and leaning on their coaching influences. They have a new trademark: Guard U.
The Arizona State University Sun Devils are spreading out the floor so their guards can drive or shoot it. The offense is making it a tough match-up with traditional teams with bigs. They are playing guys that would be a 3 or 4 anywhere else in the post slot.
The Sun Devils are spacing teams out in a unique way where they can get to the rim, make plays or shoot open three’s.
What is in the Arizona State University Sun Devils Playbook?
This playbook includes over 55 sets that Coach Hurley ran the last three years at Arizona State University.
It includes their:
* Ballscreen Offense series
* Horns series
* Backdoor series
* Zipper series
* Zone Offense
* And a creative set of 13 baseline out of bounds series
* Numerous other assorted man plays, press breakers and EOG plays.
These set plays will allow your team the ability to spread out your opponent and score in a variety of options for your best players.
Who is Chris Holtmann?
The word to describe Chris Holtmann’s brief, six-year head coaching career is successful. He spent three years at Gardner-Webb, taking a team that won eight games the year before he arrived at a school Division record 21 wins his final season. Due to that success, he was able to take home Big South Coach of the Year honors. Next, he moved on to Butler as an assistant before becoming the head coach the following season. In his three years at the Butler University, his teams went 70-31 in the Big East and made the NCAA Tournament each year. This past season he took home Big East Coach of the Year honors. Now he will look to continue this success in the Big Ten as the new coach of Ohio State University and return the Buckeyes to their former level.
About the Butler University / Ohio State Offense?
Coach Holtmann will bring with him an offense that revolves around three things: great spacing, solid screening, and crisp ball movement. Coach Holtmann is very skilled at identifying who his best offensive players are and what their strengths are and creating sets to get them the ball where they can have success. Due to the constant movement and spacing in what they run, there are driving lanes available that lead to layups or kick-outs to shooters.
What does this Chris Holtmann Butler / Ohio State Playbook give you?
This playbook includes over 50 sets that Coach Holtmann ran during his time at Butler, including many from this year’s NCAA Tournament. It includes their:
* Ballscreen Offense series
* Horns series
* Isolation series
* Post diagonal series
* Numerous other assorted man plays
* And a creative set of 1-4 low baseline out of bounds series
These sets are easy to implement but will enhance any team’s offense by creating a variety of scoring options for their best players.

Hi Coach!
What exactly is a “Frankenstein” playbook?
Let me explain…
I was sitting around last weekend watching some of the HUGE college upsets, and the commentator made some offbeat comment about this guy’s field goal shooting and the defense he was up against…
Nothing very profound, but it got me wondering about FG% and defensive pairings...
(Don’t judge me. That’s just how my mind works.)
The more I mulled over the various combinations in my head, the more I forgot about the game and started jotting down some notes.
Kinda like a “what would happen if…” scenario…
Next thing you know, the “evil scientist” in me starts going to work…
<>
Suddenly I’m onto something…
Here’s my premise:
“What if you took the absolute best field goal % teams in the NCAA today (D1 only) and put this up against the zone…and then put everything into one playbook?”
I think I actually said it out loud (as any true evil scientist would).
Step 1: Go to the leaderboard for the 2019-2020 season.
Step 2: Sort the list by order of the top 20 FG% made.
Step 3: **Add 20 minutes worth of video clips that correspond with everything!** 😊
Step 4: Produce 104 pages of the best shooting teams vs the zone defense in the country, as of this writing!
This thing is sweeeeet!

Got some good shooters on your team?
Playing against a zone defense a lot?
You can have some serious fun with this book…and most likely win a few more games along the way!
I intentionally created this so you can plug these into your scheme at your very next practice.
NOTE: Don’t miss the video…it really ties everything together!

Here is our newest playbook that you should put in your coaching library: New San Antonio Spurs Mid-Range Offense Playbook
The NBA San Antonio Spurs are one of the best teams to watch for a high school coach. They focus on the mid-range game, and that is something that most high school teams can do. They have played power basketball with Tim Duncan. Tony Parker used a motion offense when he was their top scorer. They are now using this mid-range offense with Lamar Aldridge. Coach Popovich is leading down the right path with this offense.
In the last 24 games, The Spurs have been within five points of those game. They are 13-3 in those games. The Mid-Range Offense has them running different options, and their defense isn’t as good, but they are winning.
The Spurs have the most shots from the mid-range in the league. LaMarcus Aldridge leads them in those shots. The Spurs have adapted to him instead of the other way around. Most high school teams don’t have great outside shooters. It’s the perfect high school offense.
Teams should look at this shot because they have the personnel for it. We all don’t have a Kevin Durant that can hit the NBA three-point shot. You have to adapt to your personnel.
This offense will allow your catch and shoot kids to get their shots off. You can make your team into an excellent pick & roll team with this offense.
You have an opportunity to see 152 pages of NBA X’s and O’s for $15! One of the best opportunities to see what Coach Gregg Popovich is doing with the San Antonio Spurs this season. Grab this Spurs Mid-Range Offense Playbook Today! Great X’s and O’s.
