As coaches, we always tell our players, “ Come ready to play!” Stronger awareness in-the-moment promotes better mental focus. A stronger mental focus promotes higher levels of performance.
As a coach, we should do everything in our power to help our players sharpen mental focus. A stronger individual and collective mental focus will add to the team’s bottom line. Increased performance improvement will show up in statistical outputs and ultimately in the win totals.
The moment to moment practice of being present is what mindfulness is.
Mindfulness is the practice of maintaining a moment-by-moment focus, awareness, and observation of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment to access the present peace and flow that already exists for you at the moment. Mindfulness helps to train your everyday FOCUS so that your present moment awareness deepens and grows.
