The Wide Zone Scheme is nothing new to the football world but in recent years we have seen a huge resurgence in the scheme. Whether it is at the NFL level with teams like the Titans, Packers, and Rams or College Teams such as BYU & Oregon along with High Schools America that are implementing the Wide Zone, teams at all levels are finding that this scheme can yield great results. This Wide Zone creates an efficient offense by cutting down the negative plays while also having the ability to create explosive plays by slicing through an overstretched defense!

Any run scheme is only as good as the Offensive Line that blocks for it. You can have all the best schemes and perfect play-calling, but if the Big Boys up front cannot execute, it is all for nothing. In Volume II of the Wide Zone Series we will look into how to master all of the blocks needed to master the Wide Zone. Each block will be highly detailed along with film & several examples to explain the techniques needed to dominate. Some of the common blocks that we will cover are: The Drive Reach, Ripping the Sink, Shot Put, and all of the different Cut-Off techniques to create perfect Horizontal Distortion. The Tunnel Screen can be one of the most Explosive plays in all of football, but only when ran correctly. The Screen itself allows for the Offense to get the ball in the hands of a play-maker out in space, while getting Offensive Lineman out on the perimeter to block. The TCU Offense was one of the most impressive offenses in all of College Football in 2022. It accounted for 6,825 Total yards while scoring nearly 39 points per game. The Horn Frogs were able to do so by taking advantage of explosive receivers and spreading the field. The UCLA Bruins have one of the top rushing attacks in all of College Football (Ranked #20 nationally). A large part of that is the Chip Kelly Offensive Innovation that has come full circle in LA. Offensive Coordinator Garrett Riley has largely been associated with his Air Raid offense, which emphasizes a high-tempo passing attack. His offensive system includes many of the elements of the traditional Air Raid philosophy, such as quick passes, spread formations, and vertical passing concepts. Inside this mini study we cover many topics that make up the Garrett Riley Offense including his GT Counter Track out a Nub formation and his use of Air Raid Staples, to create a huge Horizontal Stretch on a defense.

The Michigan Offense is a great example of how to properly merge the two worlds of spread football and heavy personnel sets to get the best of both worlds. Florida had some absolutely amazing athletes and playmakers in the 2020 Season, but they were also placed in a position to be successful. Two Years ago Josh Heupel had the job of replacing one of the most beloved college football coaches at University of Central Florida. The Wide Zone Scheme is nothing new to the football world but in recent years we have seen a huge resurgence in the scheme. Whether it is at the NFL level with teams like the Titans, Packers, and Rams or College Teams such as BYU & Oregon along with High Schools Across America that are implementing the Wide Zone. Teams at all levels are finding that this scheme can yield great results. This Wide Zone creates an efficient offense by cutting down the negative plays while also having the ability to create explosive plays by slicing through an overstretched defense!

Having an effective Base Run Scheme is great, but if you don't have anything to protect it, it won't be effective for long. You need something to keep the defense honest so that they can't overload your bread n' butter. That is why it is always important to have Restraints & Counters off your main scheme. This forces the defense to respect all dimensions of your offense and not allow them to stop your base. All great offenses are built with this system approach, just take a look at Oklahoma and their GT Counter, or how Washington State protects Mesh, and teams like BYU & the Packers protect their Wide Zone. This is with the use of different types of Play-Actions, RPO's, and run counters such as misdirections or reverses. Each one is designed to attack a specific defender that has committed themselves to stopping your Wide Zone Scheme. In the realm of college football, few names evoke as much excitement and anticipation as Lincoln Riley, renowned for his innovative offensive prowess. As the orchestrator of the USC offense, Riley has seamlessly blended classic staples like the GT Counter and Four Verts with his latest adaptations, creating a dynamic and unpredictable offensive powerhouse. The Georgia Offense not only created explosive plays but they also capitalized in the red zone better than anyone. They found unique ways to finish on the goalline. Inside this course we go over several of the Georgia Goalline/Low Redzone packages. Explaining how they used shifts/motions and misdirection to perfection. Along with that we go over several of their explosive play-action shots. One of the formations that Georgia utilized perhaps more than anyone was the Bunch Formation, very similar to how the 2019 LSU Tigers utilized the formation on their Championship run. Georgia did have amazing talent on their roster there is no doubt about it, but their coaching staff should also get credit for utilizing that talent. They do this by working restraints and counters off their bread n’ butter as well as utilizing some of the best eye candy and misdirection we have seen from an offense in a long time. 

Currently the #1 Offense in the NCAA, the Ohio State Buckeyes is cruising averaging 550 Yards Per Game. The Ohio State Buckeyes have been able to create an explosive passing attack based around Crossing Patterns and a Deep Play-Action Shot game. Inside this breakdown we will examine the Ohio State Offense in their game against the Oregon Ducks in which they had 612 Totals Yards including 484 Passing Yards. This was done with the use of some great passing schemes that had receivers wide open as Ohio State attacked the Ducks defensive leverage constantly. This included a deadly RPO attack that took advantage of Oregon’s defensive rules. We also look into the different ways they attacked specific defensive coverages while providing easy and efficient decisions for their freshmen QB.

During a pandemic season the Oregon Ducks settled in with a new Offensive Coordinator in Joe Moorehead and he did not disappoint. Oregon maintained their ability to have a tough nosed downhill run game (featuring a ton of Pistol) but also added in some more creativity to their schemes. A few more RPO tags to attack defenses along with some leverage & natural rubs to get even more out of their base concepts. While Lincoln Riley’s Address, Team, and Conference changed two things did not. First his explosive offense still revolved around a run game with heavy doses of Midzone & GT Counter packaged together w/ a Deep Shot Play-Action attack and an efficient dropback passing game. Secondly his QB did not change as he brought Caden Williams with him and helped progress him into a Heisman Winning QB for the USC Trojans. Oregon had one of the most efficient offenses in all of college football while also being able to be highly explosive. He was at every stop with Hal Mumme from Iowa Wesleyan, Valdosta, to Kentucky. Then he went out on his own first as an Offensive Coordinator at Oklahoma then as the Head Coach at Texas Tech before leaving and eventually landing in the Palouse of Pullman, WA to coach the Washington State Cougars. The one thing that cannot be misunderstood about Leach is that he puts up numbers both on the scoreboards and in the Passing Yards Column. Leach has been a Two-Time National Coach of the Year while resetting the record books at every stop. Out of the 50 Most Productive Passing Seasons, Leach’s Quarterbacks have accounted for 11 of those seasons.

The Wide Zone Scheme is. nothing new to the football world but in recent years we have seen a huge resurgence in the scheme. This Wide Zone creates an efficient offense by cutting down the negative plays while also having the ability to create explosive plays by slicing through an overstretched defense!

The Crimson Tide Offense was on full display in the 2020 season and they did not disappoint in the National Championship Game. In a game against a tough Ohio State defense the Tide was able to still rack up 621 yards of Offense while scoring 52 points. They were able to do so by constantly putting the Buckeye defenders in conflict. Alabama's Offensive Coordinator Steve Sarkisian was able to package an RPO game that kept the Buckeyes off balance all game. Inside this course we will detail how he utilized every form of the RPO Game from Free Access throws, 3rd Level, Quick Screens, and even a Sucker RPO off a Quick Screen to force the rules of the defenders to go against them. Along with the RPO game, we wanted to go in-depth in how Alabama handled the Red Zone. This featured both the ability of getting into Heavy Personnel while ground & pounding the defense along with using motions and shifts to dictate the defense while taking advantage of leverage to get guys wide open. The last aspect of the Alabama offense we will get into is their ability to attack specific coverages. Their use of shifts to force the defense to show their hand pre-snap.
