Foam Ball Receiving (Soft Hands & Pocket Awareness)
Another important component to being a successful receiving catcher is what we call pocket awareness. The more consistently the catcher can receive pitches in the pocket (area between the thumb and index finger), the less "wear and tear" on their hand because the ball is hitting leather instead of their hand AND the easier it is to manipulate the ball/mitt to get more strike calls.
In fact, when done correctly, and the ball hits the pocket, a lot of times the pitch/ball will do some of the work for the catcher by snapping the mitt up and back on low pitches. If the ball hits the palm of the hand, it will not produce the same natural movement of the mitt toward the strike zone.
