Lesson 7:
The "Big 4" of Receiving
As was explained earlier, receiving is the most important skill a catcher will perform during a game. The main reason being is the high number of repetitions that are performed throughout a game. The ability to get the borderline pitches called strikes can not only change the outcome of an at-bat, but also an inning and even the game. Again, a catchers receiving is by far the most important skill they perform and it's not even close!
There are several components to being a good receiving catcher but in my opinion, there are four main aspects of the skill that can make the biggest difference in performance. I call them the “Big 4,” meaning the four most important things you or your catcher should be doing to be a successful receiving catcher:
There are additional things your catcher can do to help with getting strikes called more consistently, but in my opinion, proper receiving revolves around these four key components.
