Lesson 17:
Wrist Weight Resisted Short Hop Receiving
An important component to receiving is to have the mitt below the plane of the pitch. With that said, a common mistake is to lift the mitt early and end up above the low strike and stri-ball (a pitch that can be called a strike or a ball depending on how we receive it).
A great drill to force the catcher to stay below the pitch (because they start their mitt on the ground) is Short Hop Receiving with the ball literally being bounced to the catcher. Their mitt must start on the ground because the ball will be there.
The 2-pound wrist weight adds some resistance for the catcher to move against. Once the resistance is removed, the catcher will move more efficiently.
