Lesson 7:
Backhand Drop-Shot | Technique, Placement
This drill is to practice backhand drop-shot: cross-court, down-the-line, and alternating side to side.
The drop-shot is a finesse shot that requires a good feel for the court, racquet, and ball.
As technical elements... when hitting drop-shots use a continental grip, prepare with the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact and, as you bring the racquet to meet the ball from high to low, think about cushioning the ball like catching an egg on a pillow. :)
Don’t worry if you will hit quite a few balls into the net or too deep; with practice, you will get a good feel for the court, and how much spin and push to impart on the ball.
Secret: Beginning with the racquet head above the shoulder (high) and cushioning the ball at contact (like catching something fragile) should do the trick; from there on, just practice to get a good feel for how much should you push the ball to land just over the net.
