Lesson 32:
Forehand and Backhand Volley | Punch and Drive
This tennis drill is about practicing volleys and good control of the racquet.
I'll be inside the service court ready to hit the following series of shots: 6 punch-volleys (under-spin), 6 drive-volleys (topspin), followed by alternating between 1 punch-volley and 1 drive-volley.
I'll do that on both the forehand and backhand side.
Technical aspects to be considered:
- for punch-volleys use hammer/continental grip, for drive-volleys use semi-western grip (forehand), or eastern backhand grip (backhand);
- for both types of volleys, the shorter the backswing, the better chance to contact the ball in front;
- for punch-volleys swing from high to low to create slice/under-spin; for drive-volleys swing from low to high to create topspin;
- good footwork and early preparation.
Secrets:
- Punch-Volley: Lock the wrist at 90-degree between the forearm and racquet, and prepare the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact to create power and spin.
- Drive-Volley: Timing is key to contact the ball in front, therefore really try to avoid taking the racquet back (prepare it in line with your dominant shoulder).
