    Backhand | Slice Approach, Volley, Drop

     view description
    • This drill is very good for learning and practicing how to move up and playing at the net.
      The ball machine will feed balls to my left side, landing around service line, and I will hit a slice approach shot, followed by a volley and a drop-volley; one series going down-the-line, then cross-court, and so forth.
      From a technical point of view, follow these aspects:

      - keep the feet moving at all times
      - for the backhand slice approach, use a continental grip, begin the swing with the racquet above the non-dominant shoulder and higher than the eventual point of contact in order to swing down and forward on the ball to create under-spin; because of it, the ball will stay low after the bounce;
      - as you arrive at the net, perform a split-step (to get the body in balance) and get ready for the volley;
      - use continental grip for the volley, avoid backswing (or very abbreviated), make contact with the ball out in front, short follow-through;
      - the drop-volley should be made with a soft grip, catching the ball on the strings and cushioning the impact.

      Secrets:
      - Slice Backhand Approach: Get the racquet head set above the non-dominant shoulder. The higher the better, letting the gravity help in creating pace and under-spin on the ball.
      - Backhand Volley: Lock the wrist at 90-degree angle between the forearm and racquet, avoid the backswing (catch the ball in front).
      - Drop-Volley: Cushion the ball on the strings like someone would throw you an egg to catch and not break.
