  • Lesson 20:
    Triangle Forehand

     view description
    • This is one of the best tennis drills for accuracy and groundstrokes consistency.
      The ball machine will feed balls deep to my forehand side; there are 3 cones positioned on the same side with the ball machine:

      - 1 on the right of the ball machine, about half-way between service line and baseline, close to the right singles sideline;
      - 1 on the left of the ball machine, half-way between service line and baseline, and close to the left singles sideline;
      - 1 cone also to the left of the ball machine, just inside the service line and close to the singles sideline.

      My task will be to practice series of 3 shots: forehand short cross-court, forehand deep cross-court, and forehand deep down-the-line.
      While the two, deep forehands (down-the-line and cross-court) are easier to execute, the third one (short cross-court) requires a lot more spin and placement control; for the third shot come with the racquet more around and hit the outside of the ball to create the necessary angle and clear the net.

      Technical elements:
      - Prepare the racquet behind the path of the incoming ball before it bounces on your side
      - Grip: semi-western
      - Cradle the racquet neck with the non-dominant hand to limit the backswing and coil the upper body
      - Racquet head higher than the shoulder level
      - Open stance for deep balls, square stance for short balls
      - Brush up on the ball for topspin (less for deep balls, more for the sharp angle cross-court).
