Lesson 43:
Forehand Volley | Depth
For this drill, I set the ball machine to feed to my right (forehand) side - I will practice forehand volleys.
There is a line of cones along the service line; I will be practicing:
- 5 forehand volleys cross-court, in a row;
- then 5 forehand volleys down-the-line, in a row;
- followed by 10 forehand volleys alternating 1 down-the-line and 1 cross-court.
All the balls should land beyond the line of cones, otherwise, I will begin the respective series from 0.
This is a good ball machine drill to practice forehand volley consistency and placement under pressure.
Technical elements to be observed:
- grip: continental/hammer
- lock the wrist at a 90-degree angle between the forearm and racquet
- get the racquet head set higher than the dominant shoulder so you can swing down on the ball to create pace and under-spin;
- footwork: step out onto the outside foot (load the body weight), then transfer the weight onto the inside foot as the racquet meets the ball.
Secret: Resist the urge to swing to create power on volleys. The volley is more of placement than a power shot. If you do want some pace behind your forehand volley, come down on the ball and step into it, no backswing.
