Lesson 15:
Backhand Groundstroke | Topspin and Slice
This is a very good drill for practicing backhand groundstroke variety from the baseline.
The ball machine will feed deep towards the left baseline.
I will practice hitting one backhand topspin and one backhand slice, alternating between the two; I will hit a few balls down the line, then cross-court, and lastly I will alternate between hitting down the line and cross-court.
There are a few technical aspects that should be taken into consideration:
- for the topspin backhand, since I hit one-handed, the eastern backhand grip is important, early preparation, short backswing, and a long follow-through is key for a relaxed swing;
- for the slice backhand, the continental grip, preparing with the racquet head above the eventual point of contact is important to swing from high to low and through the ball to create pace and under-spin.
Secrets:
- Topspin Backhand Groundstroke: Getting a good shoulder turn (look over the dominant shoulder) before the ball bounces will help you be ready for the ball.
- Slice Backhand Groundstroke: Set the racquet head higher than the non-dominant shoulder to use the gravity when swinging through the ball for slice and pace.
