Lesson 22:
Forehand | Topspin Approach, Volley, Drop
This is a good drill for learning and practicing moving up and playing at the net.
The ball machine will feed to my right side so that the balls land around service line; I will hit a topspin forehand approach then move up to the net to hit a volley and a drop-volley; I will aim the 3 shots cross-court, then down-the-line, and so on, alternating sides after each series.
The technical aspects that should be taken into consideration:
- use extra topspin when hitting the forehand approach shot due to the fact that you have less court to send the ball to (as opposed to hitting from the baseline); grip: semi-western;
- perform a split-step before hitting the volley (this gets the body in balance and ready to push to the next ball);
- use continental/hammer grip, short backswing, and short follow-through; there should be a 90-degree angle between the forearm and racquet during the volley stroke;
- for a successful drop-volley, cushion the ball on the strings, just like catching an egg on a pillow.
Secrets:
- Topspin Forehand Approach: Shorten the backswing and brush more on the back of the ball for an extra spin to keep the ball in play.
- Forehand Volley: Lock the wrist at a 90-degree angle between forearm and racquet (tip up), and prepare with the racquet head higher so you can punch down and forward to create pace and under-spin on the ball.
- Drop-Volley: Imagine someone is tossing an egg for you to catch without breaking it - soften the contact with the ball (cushion it on the strings).
