Lesson 28:
Forehand | Half-Volley, Low Volleys
This is a drill that doubles players benefit the most due to the fact that it is good for how to transition and play at the net.
The ball machine is set to feed balls that land just inside the service line, forehand side; I will begin the drill from about halfway between service line and baseline.
The first ball will be a half-volley approach shot (down-the-line); then I will move up towards the net, split step, and ready for low volleys which I will direct alternating left and right.
The following technical elements should be considered:
- grip: continental/hammer for all strokes (half-volley, low volleys)
- stay low for good balance and racket/ball control
- for half-volley, avoid taking the racquet back; follow-through in the direction of your target (down-the-line)
- for low volleys, keep the racquet out in front and do not let it pass the line of your shoulders on the backswing; the low volleys are not aggressive shots - they are meant to get the ball in play and placing them deeply if possible.
Secrets:
- Half-Volley Approach Shot:
Set the racket head behind the path of the ball and try to contact it right after the bounce, and all this time having the racket head ahead of you (keep it in front of your body).
- Low Volleys:
Lock the wrist at a 90-degree angle between the forearm and racket, and no backswing.
