Lesson 5:
Slice Backhand Groundstroke | Technique, Placement
This is a simple drill that is meant to improve your slice backhand groundstroke technique, consistency, and placement;
As you can see I placed cones but do not focus on knocking them down.
I'll practice hitting 5 balls down-the-line, 5 cross-court, and 10 alternating side to side.
The technical elements you should follow are:
- continental grip;
- start with the racquet higher than the shoulder and the eventual point of contact;
- look at the incoming ball over the dominant shoulder (chin touching it);
- swing down and forward through the ball;
- to make it even simpler, the slice backhand groundstroke is like a volley to which you add the backswing and longer follow-through;
- for balance, your arms should move away from each other as you swing through the ball (spread your wings).
If your slice groundstroke lands too short is because you are chopping downward instead of swinging down AND forward.
Secret: For a good slice backhand groundstroke always begin your swing with the racquet head high above your shoulder - you will let the gravity help you swing through the ball and create a good under-spin on the ball.
