Lesson 18:
Two Minutes | Topspin and Slice
One of my favorite tennis drills for groundstrokes variety, stamina, and spin control.
The ball machine will feed balls deep, while oscillating (turning side to side); I will be moving according to where the ball lands and alternate between hitting topspin and slice groundstrokes (forehand or backhand).
I will continue hitting topspin and slice groundstrokes for two minutes (set a watch or any timer to let you know when you can take a rest); after a short 1-minute break, it can be done again.
It is a good ball machine tennis drill for groundstrokes practice and conditioning.
Technical aspects to be considered:
- early preparation - get the racquet set behind the path of the incoming ball before it bounces on your side;
- use semi-western grip for topspin forehand groundstrokes, continental/hammer grip for both forehand and backhand slice shots, eastern backhand grip for one-handed topspin backhand groundstroke;
- prepare with the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact to use the gravity into creating pace and spin.
Secrets:
- Topspin Forehand Groundstroke: Cradle the racquet neck with the non-dominant hand to limit the backswing, and prepare with a good shoulder turn which can help in adding extra power to the shot.
- Topspin Backhand Groundstroke (One-handed): Take a good shoulder turn (look over the dominant shoulder) as you prepare for the ball.
- Forehand and Backhand Slice Groundstrokes: Preparing with the racquet head higher than the shoulders will help in creating power and good under-spin on the ball.
