Lesson 2:
Forehand Groundstroke | Technique, Placement
This is a simple drill to practice forehand groundstrokes consistency, technique, and placement.
I use cones as points of reference, but don’t take them as targets to knock down; when you practice, you should keep your eyes on the ball, technique, and footwork.
Technical elements to follow:
- early preparation,
- semi-western or eastern grip
- good shoulder turn,
- cradle the racket neck with the non-dominant hand (it helps to limit the backswing) as you prepare for the ball,
- footwork (cross-over followed by side shuffle steps when recovering),
- topspin to control the ball.
Since this is a warm-up drill, you should not worry about court positioning when recovering after hitting the ball; there is another drill in this program that addresses this subject; for now, just get back behind the baseline center after each shot.
Secret: Visualize what you are trying to achieve with the shot and let it happen.
When hitting forehand groundstrokes I imagine that my racket brushes up and over the ball to create topspin. Without spin, I am not able to control the ball while hitting it hard.
