Lesson 29:
Backhand | Half-Volley, Low Volleys
This drill should be practiced especially by the doubles players.
The ball machine is set to feed balls that land around the service line on my backhand side.
I will begin from behind the service line taking the ball right off the bounce (half-volley down-the-line) then move up to the net; there I will practice 4 low volleys aiming them alternating left and right.
Great drill for learning and practicing approaching and playing at the net useful mostly in doubles, but it has benefits for singles play as well.
Some of the technical elements you should follow:
- for both, the approach shot and volleys, use a continental grip;
- stay low for good balance;
- on the half-volley set the racquet face behind the path of the ball and keep it in front of the body (no backswing; the follow-through is abbreviated in the direction of your target);
- for the volleys avoid the backswing, not letting the racquet head pass the line of your shoulders; open the racquet face slightly to create underspin on the ball.
Secrets:
- Half-volley backhand: Get the racquet set behind the path of the ball keeping it out in front (no backswing). Push the ball directing it from the shoulder (lock the wrist and elbow).
- Low backhand volleys: Lock the wrist and keep the racquet head in front of the body (no backswing).
