Lesson 44:
Backhand Volley | Depth
For this drill, I set the ball machine to feed to my left (backhand) side - I will practice backhand volleys.
There is a line of cones along the service line; I will be practicing:
- 5 backhand volleys down-the-line, in a row;
- then 5 backhand volleys cross-court, in a row;
- followed by 10 backhand volleys alternating 1 down-the-line and 1 cross-court.
All the balls should land beyond the line of cones, otherwise, I will begin the respective series from 0.
This is a good ball machine drill to practice backhand volley consistency and placement under pressure.
Technical elements to be observed:
- grip: continental/hammer
- lock the wrist at a 90-degree angle between the forearm and racquet
- get the racquet head set higher than the non-dominant shoulder so you can swing down on the ball to create power and under-spin
- separate the hands through the contact to keep the body sideways and in balance
- footwork: step out onto the outside foot (load the body weight), then transfer the weight onto the inside foot as the racquet meets the ball.
Secret: Prepare the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact so you can punch down and forward to create pace and under-spin on the ball.
