Lesson 30:
Forehand Volley | Punch and Drop
This is a good drill for racquet and ball control, spin variety, and placement when playing at the net.
The ball machine will feed balls to my forehand side, I would be inside the service court.
During this drill, I will hit series of two forehand volleys: 1 punch-volley (deep with pace), and 1 drop-volley (short with lots of under-spin). I will aim them cross-court, then down-the-line, and end with alternating 2 punch-volleys and 2 drop-volleys.
The technical elements that should be considered are:
- constant footwork
- continental/hammer grip for both types of shots
- prepare with the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact so you can swing down and forward for both, volley and drop-volley (for the latter, soften the grip and cushion the ball at contact).
- for more power on the volley, step into the ball.
Secrets:
- Punch-Volley: Begin with the racquet head higher than the shoulder to use the gravity in creating pace and spin.
- Drop-Volley: Imagine someone is tossing an egg for you to catch on the racquet without breaking it (soft grip, cushion the impact).
