Lesson 27:
Backhand | Topspin Approach, Two Volleys
This is a good drill to learn and practice approaching and playing at the net.
The ball machine will feed balls to my left, having the balls land just around the service line.
I will hit one backhand approach shot with topspin, then move up to the net and hit two volleys: one down-the-line and one cross-court.
From a technical point of view, you should follow these aspects:
- use more spin when hitting the topspin approach shot considering the shorter court you have to send the ball too (as compared to hitting it from the baseline);
- as you move up to the net, perform a split-step to get in balance and ready for the volleys;
- hit the ball out in front for volleys, using a continental grip, keeping the 90-degree angle between the forearm and racquet.
Secrets:
- Backhand Topspin Approach: Short backswing and brush up on the ball for an extra spin to keep the ball in play (less court considering the contact with the ball being made around service line).
- Backhand Volleys: Prepare with the racquet head higher than the shoulder so you can use the gravity to create pace and under-spin on the ball.
