    Drive. Moon. Slice. Drop.

     view description
    • An excellent drill for groundstrokes variety: power, finesse, depth, height.
      The ball machine will feed deep to my backhand side; I will alternate hitting series of 4 types of strokes: 1 backhand topspin (drive), 1 backhand high (moon), 1 backhand slice, and 1 backhand drop-shot.
      The following technical aspects should be considered:

      - for a one-handed backhand player, keeping the body sideways through the shot is key for a good balance; spread the arms during and after contact; use topspin to control the ball;
      - the moon ball is the equivalent of a lob when having the opponent at the net; for that get the racquet under the ball and open the face, send the ball high and as deep as possible;
      - slice backhand should be done changing the grip to a continental/hammer; begin with the racquet head above the shoulders and let it come down and forward through the contact to create under-spin;
      - the drop-shot is a finesse shot that should be executed with a short or no backswing and cushioning the ball at impact.

      Secrets:
      - Topspin Backhand Groundstroke: Take a big shoulder turn (look over the dominant shoulder) as you prepare for the ball - it will help with power.
      - Moon Ball: Don't let the ball drop too much after the bounce; you will need room to get under the ball to send it high.
      - Slice Backhand Groundstroke: Prepare with the racquet head higher than the non-dominant shoulder to create power and spin as you bring it down through the ball.
      - Drop-Shot: Bring your racquet from high to low as you cushion the ball at impact.
