Lesson 3:
Backhand Groundstroke | Technique, Placement
Practice backhand groundstroke: 5 down-the-line, 5 cross-court, and 10 alternating side to side.
This is a drill meant to improve backhand groundstroke technique, consistency, and placement; should be considered a warm-up for more complex drills.
For the purpose of getting a good work-out, the player should recover towards the baseline center after each shot. Proper recovery will be addressed in a different drill.
Technical elements to be observed:
- early preparation with a good shoulder turn,
- grip: eastern backhand (one-handed); continental (dominant hand) and eastern (non-dominant hand) for two-handed backhand;
- good topspin to control the depth of the ball,
- cross-over step after each shot followed by the side shuffles.
Secret: Understand the point of contact when hitting a one-handed backhand. Once you know where the contact with the ball should be made, a proper grip and spacing between the racquet and the body - is all the information you need. Everything else will follow in place.
