Lesson 24:
Forehand | Slice Approach, Volley, Drop
This drill is very good for learning and practicing how to move up and play at the net.
The ball machine will feed balls to my right side and I will hit a slice approach groundstroke, followed by a volley and a drop-volley; one series going down-the-line, then cross-court, and so forth.
From a technical point of view, follow these aspects:
- keep the feet moving at all times
- for the slice approach, use a continental grip, begin the swing with the racquet above the dominant shoulder and higher than the eventual point of contact in order to swing down on the ball and create underspin; because of it, the ball will stay low after the bounce;
- as you arrive at the net, perform a split step and get ready for the volley;
- use continental grip for the volley, avoid backswing (or very abbreviated), make contact with the ball out in front and a short follow-through;
- the drop-volley should be made with a soft grip, catching the ball on the strings and cushioning the impact.
Secrets:
- Forehand Slice Approach: Lock the wrist at 90-degree angle between forearm and racquet, and keep the non-dominant hand on the racquet neck until you are ready to swing down and forward - it will help you stabilize the racquet and make a clean contact with the ball.
- Volley Forehand: Lock the wrist at 90-degree and prepare with the racquet higher then the eventual contact.
- Drop-Volley: Catch the ball on the strings imagining that the ball would be an egg that someone would toss for you to catch (cushion the contact).
