Lesson 26:
Forehand | Topspin Approach, Two Volleys
This is a good drill to learn and practice approaching and playing at the net.
The ball machine will feed balls to my right side (forehand), having the balls land just around the service line.
I will hit one forehand approach shot with topspin, then move up to the net and hit two volleys: one cross-court and one down-the-line.
From a technical point of view, you should follow these aspects:
- use more topspin when hitting the approach shot considering the shorter court you have to send the ball to (as compared to hitting the ball from the baseline); grip: semi-western;
- as you move up to the net, perform a split step to get in balance and ready for the volleys;
- hit the ball out in front for volleys, using a continental grip, keeping the 90-degree angle between forearm and racquet.
Secrets:
- Forehand Topspin Approach: Shorten the backswing and brush up on the ball more to keep it in play.
- Forehand Volleys: Lock the wrist with the racquet head up, higher than the shoulder - this will allow you to come down on the ball to create under-spin.
