Lesson 17:
Backhand Groundstroke | Topspin, Slice, Drop
This is one of the best ball machine tennis drills because it is a great combination for practicing power, placement, spin, and touch.
The ball machine will send the balls deep to the baseline, left side (backhand); I will practice series of 3 shots: 1 topspin backhand, 1 slice backhand, and 1 drop-shot changing direction (DTL and CC) after each ball hit.
The following technical aspects should be considered:
- for the topspin backhand notice the short backswing and relaxed follow-through; use the legs to add power and balance to the body;
- for the slice groundstroke, begin the swing holding the racquet with a continental grip and the racquet head above the non-dominant shoulder; you want to swing from higher than the eventual point of contact to create underspin and pace;
- for the drop-shot, soften the grip and push the ball instead of swinging; for that, use a short backswing and follow-through; cushion the ball at impact.
Secrets:
- Topspin Backhand Groundstroke: Get a good shoulder turn (look over the dominant shoulder) as you prepare for the ball.
- Slice Backhand Groundstroke: Set the racquet head higher than the non-dominant shoulder to come down on the ball for slice and pace.
- Backhand Drop-Shot: Cushion the ball at impact while swinging from high to low - soft hands, like catching an egg on a pillow.
