Lesson 31:
Backhand Volley | Punch and Drop
This is a good drill for racquet and ball control, spin variety, and placement when playing at the net.
The ball machine will feed balls to my left/backhand side; I will be inside the service court.
During this drill I will hit series of two backhand volleys - 1 punch-volley (pace and deep), and 1 drop-volley (short with lots of underspin); I will aim them down-the-line, then cross-court, and end with alternating 2 punch-volleys and 2 drop-volleys.
The technical elements that should be considered are:
- constant footwork
- continental/hammer grip for both types of shots
- prepare with the racquet head higher than the eventual point of contact so you can push down and forward for both punch-volley and drop-volley; for the latter, soften the grip and cushion the ball at contact;
- the back (non-dominant) elbow should be elevated to limit the backswing;
- for more power on the volley, step into the ball.
Secrets:
- Backhand Punch-Volley: Begin with the racquet head above the non-dominant shoulder to use gravity in creating pace and spin.
- Backhand Drop-Volley: Soften the impact with the ball just like someone would be tossing an egg for you to catch without breaking it.
