Lesson 36:
Forehand Groundstroke | Deep and Short
This drill is great for learning and improving groundstrokes placement: side to side, deep and short.
The ball machine will feed balls to my right side for forehand groundstroke practice; there is a line of cones on the opposite side, parallel and behind the service line.
I will hit:
- 5 balls cross-court that land deep (between the line of cones and baseline);
- 5 balls cross-court short landing before the line of cones;
- followed by the same deep and short series of 5 balls each directed down-the-line;
- then continue with series of 2 balls deep cross-court and down-the-line, and 2 balls short cross-court and down-the-line.
Technical aspects that should be considered:
- for the deep shots, aim higher over the net with less spin;
- for the short balls, brush more on the back of the ball to create extra topspin;
- keep feet moving, stay down and prepare for the ball early by getting the body and racquet set behind the incoming ball before it bounces on your side.
