Lesson 38:
One Up / One Back - Volley
A fun way to practice the volley is the "One Up / One Back" game in which the players begin at about 3 feet from the net.
The coach is on the other side of the net having a basket of balls to feed from.
There are also balls lined up (5) along the center line, on players' side. Each ball represents a stage that the players have to follow as they advance towards the service line.
The drill begins with the coach feeding each player a ball to volley. If the volley is successful (goes over the net and inside the court), the player steps back to the next stage. But if the player misses the volley she will step forward towards the net.
(Note: The above video shows the drill in which players are required to make the ball land between the service line and baseline; but beginning players can focus on only sending the ball over the net and inside the singles court)
Eventually, one of the players will hit the ball in and "advance" towards the last stage - the service line, from where she will have to execute a volley and make it over the net and inside the court.
The first player to complete all stages wins the game.
With beginning players, the fact that they can tap the ball and make it go over the net, it is good enough for the game to be fun.
