Lesson 37:
Short and Deep
"Short and Deep" is an excellent drill that anybody can do (tennis parents included) with beginning or competitive players.
For beginning players it is a good way to learn how to track the ball, move to and away from it, learn optimal contact as well as practice their groundstrokes.
The player begins the drill at the baseline, the coach has a basket of balls to feed (by hand) from, positioned just behind the service line.
The coach will feed, by hand, series of 4 balls: 1 short (low) and 1 deep (high) on the player's forehand side, and 1 short (low) and 1 deep (high) on the player's backhand side.
The player will move forward to hit the short ball, then back for the deep one, and so on for both forehand and backhand sides.
Do this drill 4 times, rest for 1 minute, and repeat.
