Lesson 12:
Three Ball Two Knee Exchanges
This is a great multi-use drill/exercise that trains quick hands, hand eye coordination, pocket awareness, exchange fundamentals and front arm mechanics all at the same time. I call it the Three Ball Two Knee Exchange Drill.
DRILL EXPLANATION: The first ball is "paddled" meaning leave the mitt open, let the ball hit the pocket and drop. You ideally want to hear a pop because if you don't, that typically means the ball missed the pocket. The second ball is received and then exchanged just prior to receiving the two-pound heavy ball. We utilize the heavy ball because that forces the catcher to have a strong front side (mitt arm) while keeping the mitt out front. A common mistake is to allow the mitt and mitt arm to come too far back during the exchange. The mitt should stay out front to help initiate the throwing process.
