This drill/game teaches the one-up-back-formation team how to play against a two-up formation: court positioning, shot selection, and communication.

Set-up:

There is a one-up-one-back team on one side: player A at the baseline and (her partner) player B is just inside the service line. The other team begins with players C and D on the service line.

Drill:

Every point begins with player A feeding a ball to team C-D who approaches the net as soon as they receive the feed.

From there on the point is played out respecting the following details (given to players by the coach):

– player B is in a fragile position being attacked by the two opposing players;

– player A should not stand too far back – it is recommended that she steps inside the baseline to cover the angles and short balls;

– team A – B is in a tough situation offering so much court open for the opposing team (between them and on the baseline player’s side);

– a suggestion for the baseline player would be to join her partner at the net.

Play to 7 points then players switch places clockwise.
