One of the tactics that a serving team can use is to switch halves of the court once the ball is put in play. To do so, both players (at the net and baseline) must time their moves properly. The following drill will teach the serving team to accomplish just that:

Drill:

Team A-B are the serving team, C-D are the receiving team.

A serves to D, B and C are at the net, opposite sides.

The two teams alternate serving 2 points each and they all play a game to 11.

Once A serves to D, both players, A and B, must wait until the ball bounces inside the service box before they do the switch – B moves left, A moves right (as in the graphic below). Their switch has to be very quick and in balance and… only right as the ball bounced!

Alternate serving two points each player having the serving team’s players switch left-right as the serve gets in.

Note: Even though the serving team’s move is predictable, they can still work on timing their move and quickness (very necessary in doubles).
