Competing against a player who loves to slice (under-spin) can be very discomforting. You must prepare to stay low and aim higher than usual (the under-spin makes the ball take a low trajectory off of your racquet).
Drill:
Two players compete in a game for 7 points: one of them will hit every ball with under-spin (slice) while the other player will experiment with specific tactics to win.
(The ball can be put in play by either one of the players or a coach)
After one earns 7 points they switch roles.
Tactics to try against the “slicer”:
– Hit the ball hard (slicers love slow or medium-pace balls)
– Approach the net (slicers do not have a passing shot; this allows the approaching player to get ready and prepare the put-away volley)
– Hit the balls higher over the net and deeper into the court (slicers do not feel very comfortable with high-bouncing balls)
– Be patient and stay low (slicers can hit a lot of balls back).
