There are 3 players on the court: A is ready to return serve, B is A’s partner at the service line, C is at the net opposite A (see graphic below). The coach (F) is just inside the baseline having a basket of balls ready to serve from (the reason he’ll serve from inside the baseline is to not have to strain his arm while serving all the time).

If there are more than 3 players in this class, the remaining ones (D and E) will have to wait outside the lines and players will rotate after every 4 points played.

Drill:

The coach serves to player A.

A will have to return every time to C.

C learns and practices the following:

– if A’s return is hard, C will block the ball and send it back to A;

– if A’s return is slower, C will attack it and send the ball towards B’s feet or angle it away from her.

B’s job is to defend and react from the service line.

After player C hits the ball to B the play stops right after B’s reaction to the ball.

Note

The purpose of this drill is to teach the net player the options she has when the return of serve comes at her. Once these options are practiced they will become habits during the match.

Also, the returner’s partner (B) practices quick reaction and decision making.
