This situation happens in a doubles match when one of the players has a weak backhand and prefers to lob the return over the net opponent.
In this case, the serving team should begin with the net player situated further back, just inside the service line so that he can intercept the incoming lob – see graphic below.
Another alternative would be for the net player to begin up at the net and, as his partner serves, he moves back towards the service line in anticipation of the lob return.
– Play 4 games (each player serves one game) where the return is always a lob, opposing net player begins the point just inside the service line.
This teaches players that the position at the net must not be always the same at the beginning of the point; it should be adjusted based on the opponents’ weaknesses and to the serve placement.
