The coach is halfway between the service line and baseline having a basket of balls to feed from. Players line up behind the service line (opposite side from the coach) having a line of 3 cones placed along the center line and in front of them.
Targets are positioned on the coach’s side: close to the singles ad side line and baseline; and just behind the deuce side service line (see graphic below).
Drill:
The coach feeds, to the first player in line, two balls as follows:
1. short ball (lands inside the deuce service box) – the player attacks with an aggressive down-the-line groundstroke (to target)
2. forehand/backhand volley feed which the player will aim to the second set of targets (behind the service line).
The player then jogs back in line making room for the next player to take his turn (variation: the player can touch the left-side net post before jogging back to the end of the line).
Repeat this drill on the backhand side (switch places of targets).
Recommended for teaching intermediate and advanced players (the pace of the feed should be faster for the latter).
