Tactical Purpose: Practice good court coverage once you execute a drop shot, and finish the point.
Set-up: Player A starts at the baseline on one side; on the opposite is player B, also on the baseline. The coach is just outside the doubles alley, on the same side with player B.
Drill:
The point starts with the coach feeding a ball for player A. The placement of the ball should be close to the middle of the court, at medium pace.
Player A moves up to take the ball on the rise and executes a drop shot. Regardless of how well executed the drop shot is, she will move up to the net. Player A’s focus should be to follow the same path of the outgoing ball and as much as possible to cover the angles that the opposing player (B) might have when returning the drop shot.
Player B, who will move up to retrieve the drop-shot only after A made contact with the ball, should try to pass player A using angled shots (or lobs) at medium pace. The point is played out from this situation, both players using only medium pace strokes.
Play first to win 7 points and then switch roles and sides.
Note: Player A uses under-spin to create successful drop-shots, times the split steps and pays attention to cover player B’s possible angles.
