The offensive personnel plays a crucial role in determining the success of a team's performance. The personnel selection process is essential in building a cohesive and productive offensive unit. It involves analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of individual players and matching them with specific roles on the team. Selecting the right personnel can make a significant difference in the team's ability to execute plays and score points.

The first step in selecting personnel is to identify the offensive scheme the team will run. The offensive scheme outlines the team's strategy and determines the types of players required to execute it effectively. For instance, if the team plans to run a pass-heavy offense, they would need receivers who are fast and have good hands. Alternatively, if the team plans to focus on running the ball, they would need running backs and offensive linemen who are strong and can create holes for the running back.

Special Team Fundamentals

Special Teams serve an important role in a football team. They have the responsibility to set both the offense and defense up by winning field position. Both offensive and defensive players have their separate roles on special team units. It is their duty to maintain good field position for their offense in addition to giving the opposing team the worst possible field position, thus making it harder for them to score. Special teams performance, and especially punt performance can highly impact team success.

What are the fundamental drills?

They are the root foundation of effective special team players. It's the basics executed with a better understanding. For any team there should be separate drills for each kick off coverage and punt teams as well as the punt return and kickoff return teams. Beginning with footwork, strategy and execution, fundamental drills such as the Stick-dip-replace can elevate a player's effectiveness. Gap Sound Run Pass Option

Create versatility in your offense by implementing a gap sound run pass option. 

What is a Run Pass Option? 

Commonly referred to as ( RPO ), the concept gives the quarterback the ability and option to give the ball to either the running back or pass to the receiver. While this takes place, it's the offensive line's duty to block as if it's a running play which ultimately puts pressure on the defense to either play the run or the pass. 

What is Gap Sound? 

The term gap sound means that the defenders in each gap are accounted for. Coach Dearmon does not like his quarterback to be exposed to taking a hit on an RPO because a defender was unaccounted for.

Run Pass Option vs Read Option

It's a common misconception that run pass options are the same as read options. 

RPO’s rely on the quarterback to make reads on the linebacker to either hand it or throw it, as the offensive line blocks the run. While the read option generally has the offensive line block in one direction or zone as the quarterback reads the defensive end to give or keep it himself.

The Money Down

You’ve heard it time and time again,” third down is the money down”. This applies to either side of the ball however converting third downs can have a demoralizing effect on your defensive unit. 

You’ll find that 3rd downs are very often the most important down for the opposing team and your defense because they both have the most to gain and lose. Not succeeding to stop a 3rd down is crucial, especially late in the game. If you do, that means an offense will face 4th down, and likely be forced to punt the ball back to their opponent or settle for a field goal attempt.

If the 3rd down is the primary weakness of your defensive unit, teams will target and exploit them. Making it impossible to convert and keep possession. There is no secret that solid third-down defenses are one of the most important aspects of a championship-caliber team.

What are pass concepts? 

Pass concepts are a variety of route combinations run by wide receivers, Running backs and tight ends. Many of which can be incorporated in run pass options. Passing concepts are designed to get a defender to bite on a route, allowing the receiver to run behind and make a big play, If not the receiver would look to catch a pass underneath. Also known as the anchor passing concept. 

What is the Run n Shoot system?

The Run and Shoot system uses a formation consisting of one running back and usually four wide receivers. The run and shoot offense is a flexible offense that can adjust "on the fly," with the receivers constantly changing their routes in response to defensive coverage and the play of the defensive players in front of them

The philosophy of the run n shoot is a counter based passing offense that is built on route. They must make adjustments to take advantage of every coverage's weakness. Spread out the defense to identify front, coverage and pressure. Essentially forces the defense to defend the entire field.

It’s like the Bruce Lee quote. “Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves”.Your offense becomes like water and takes the form it needs to to defeat your opponent. A concept practiced and incorporated with success.

Great run game = Great Offense

Teams on the professional and collegiate level who have a solid run game tend to perform better than those who don't. The primary benefit of the run game is to make the defense adjust. 

Many of the top teams in College still rely on a powerful ground game fueled by a dominant runner, allowing them to take control of a game. Setting the Standard

What is the standard? 

Creating a culture or setting the tone for your ball club can commonly be referred to setting the standard. It's a motto that not only you but your teammates pledge by. In unison. Dan Quinn said “The standard is not easily maintained but each man is mentally tough, filled with resilience and surrounded by a brotherhood that will push him to be the very best he can be”.

Why is a standard important? 

It's vital to an organzations or football team's success that they have a standard. A rule of living, code of behavior, code of honor or touchstone. Without it, there is no structure. No one to hold one another accountable for their actions. You’ll hear it often. “It's a brotherhood, it is our responsibility to make sure that we pass on this standard to all new teammates to ensure that the proud tradition and reputation we have started continues”. It's a way of living that begins from ownership all the way to its players. The state of the standard is that you always give it one hundred percent. 

Whatever you accomplish, you accomplish as a team. In order to accomplish anything as a team, there must be a standard set. Everyone’s connected to one another. In order for a player to make an interception, the defensive line must’ve created pressure. There is no I in team.

Techniques and drills of the zone read

What is a Zone Read?

Chip Kelly said it best, “Zone-read is where the quarterback is reading the defensive end whether to give the ball or keep the ball. Zone-read-option would be ``you read the defensive end and now you're going to another phase and there's a pitch back for you”.

A quarterback and tailback are used in this option offense. In the process of receiving the snap, the two players cross paths and the quarterback makes a decision based on reading the defensive team's reaction to the snap.

Many teams have had much success running the zone read. Simply by the practice of fundamental techniques and incorporation of drills such as the ride & decide and Mesh drill can highly elevate your offense. A clear understanding of gap reads can also impact the zone read. 

What is a gap read? 

The gap between the offensive linemen is what is known as a gap. The A-Gap is between the center and the guard, the B-Gap is between the guard and the tackle, the C-Gap is between the tackle and tight end, and the D-gap is outside the tight end. To prevent a successful rush attack, defenses must close these gaps.
